Chapter 44: Don’t Stop
Chapter 44: Don’t Stop
It was obvious—two legs could never outrun four, especially when the four belonged to a frenzied wild boar. Big Bullhead trailed behind the beast, eating its dust the entire way.
The hunters and warriors ahead of the boar dared not confront it head-on, as that brave soul had moments earlier. They merely circled to the sides, jabbing occasionally at its hooves.
The commentary on the scene unfolded as follows:
“Look, a crazed wild boar has broken from the inner circle. It’s charging—it’s accelerating.
Excellent, two fearless warriors are attempting to flank it. They’re almost in position.
Ah, they’ve been sent flying. But it doesn’t matter—they’ve fulfilled their purpose, slowing the boar’s rampage. Big Bullhead is closing in.
Wait, the boar is drifting! Watch as it plants its front hooves and swings its hindquarters, sending several warriors tumbling. The final blow lands squarely on a hunter’s face.
Ouch, just watching makes me wince. That hunter is done for—his head is a mess. Where’s the medical team? Someone, get him out of there! Oh right, the Lang Tribe can’t afford a medical team. Never mind, let’s return to the action.
The boar is still running. Don’t give up! Good, the warriors circling the outskirts are forming a defensive line—they’re going in!
Wow, is this bowling? Every warrior is knocked aside—ten points, absolutely ten points!
This boar is unstoppable. No one can halt its advance; it’s about to break free and dash for the gates of freedom.
Wait—it’s slowing down. What’s it doing? Is it turning to taunt its pursuers?
No, no taunting. Oh, it’s failing. The spear lodged in its body has churned its insides throughout the charge. Look, blood drips from its mouth.
Still, it hasn’t given up. It’s staggering forward, its trembling body and dull, bleeding eyes revealing a desperate hope for life.
Alas, at last, the boar collapses.
No, it’s rising again! Why? It gasps, its voice quivering with effort. Come on, everyone is waiting for you.
Come on, wild boar—this is not your final destination. As long as you keep moving, your path will keep stretching onward.
So, don’t stop.”
After breaking through the cordon, the boar finally halted, its wounds too severe and the spear inside it twisting deeper with every step. Its breath faltered and failed.
With a final effort, it staggered a few more paces before crashing to the ground, its left foreleg stretched ahead, trembling faintly.
As Big Bullhead and his men breathed a sigh of relief and moved to encircle the beast, a figure emerged from behind the massive roots before the boar, stepping onto its head and wrenching free the second-tier bone spear embedded in its flesh. With a flick, the spear spun in his hand.
“You did well—your task is complete. Don’t worry, we’ll avenge you. And your flesh will feed the war beasts of our tribe—nothing will be wasted,” Li Li said, spinning the spear and casting a shameless glance at Big Bullhead and his men.
“What are you doing back here? Are you looking to die? Get lost!” he shouted.
Across from him, the people of the Lang Tribe muttered rapidly in their dialect. Big Bullhead’s brows furrowed, his pupils narrowed, and his rain-soaked face grew tense.
His gaze lingered on Li Li’s spear and his imposing figure. Accepting a bone spear from a companion, he tightened his grip and gathered his hunters closer.
Li Li watched their gestures and heard their dialect, tapping his ear with a finger before blowing sharply on it, then lifting his head to the rain-laden sky and waving behind him.
From behind the tree roots, a group of first-tier warriors emerged, each armed with an iron spear. They did not form a tight formation, but spread out, gradually closing in on the opposing hunters.
Tension crackled between the two sides. Li Li’s group formed a half-encirclement, pressing in on the Lang Tribe’s hunting party.
Sensing the shift, the Lang hunters fell silent. They realized that this time, things were different. Their opponents were not backing down, but advancing.
Some wounded members of the Lang Tribe shrank back. Those who had been helped to their feet were dropped again. Those with weapons gripped them tightly, while others scavenged battered arms from the ground for defense.
Li Li smiled, revealing teeth scrubbed daily with bamboo salt—so white they gleamed even in the rain.
He pressed his fingers to his lips and whistled.
Shortly after, there was a stir in the grass behind the Lang hunters. Another squad, led by Li Zhong and Li Tianhua, emerged, a dozen warriors flanking the Lang Tribe’s rear.
“What do you want? We don’t want the prey anymore,” Big Bullhead finally spoke, his command of the common tongue halting but clear.
Li Li’s lips curled in a suppressed grin. He had endured so much, feigning weakness and swallowing his pride, all for this moment.
“What do I want? I want you dead! Attack!” Li Li roared.
At his shout, the rain poured down harder. Both sides erupted with battle cries and charged. This time, there would be no quarter.
Li Li met Big Bullhead head-on. They clashed, but this time, Big Bullhead could neither drive Li Li back nor seize the upper hand.
With a single blow, Li Li’s second-tier bone spear split Big Bullhead’s weapon in two, carving a bloody line across his body. If not for his second-tier hide armor, he would have been gutted on the spot.
Big Bullhead gripped the broken spear with both hands, staggering back a dozen steps. His hands shook, his palms split and bleeding, crimson mixing with rain to drip from his armor to the mud.
He looked up at Li Li and roared again, charging once more.
Li Li showed no mercy. He surged forward, rainwater splashing with his every step. As Big Bullhead swung his ruined weapon, Li Li ducked low, sidestepped, and thrust.
The spear pierced Big Bullhead’s skull, lifted him in a bloody arc, and pinned him to the earth. Blood frothed in his mouth; his body twitched, and after two shudders, he breathed his last.
With Li Li’s entry, the battle’s tide turned. Wielding his second-tier spear, he was invincible in this skirmish between the two villages.
As the fight ended, a shadow suddenly plummeted from the sky, striking the ground with a resounding thud.
