What is going on?

Aside from Bai Ge, everyone else’s hearts lurched hard enough to miss a beat, and they all clapped their hands over their ears.

“Fatso, what the hell did you do?” Ling Zhe blurted anxiously.

They had already come this far. Victory was practically within reach, and all they needed was to clear the remaining obstacles. No one had expected such a commotion at the final moment.

“I-I didn’t touch anything!” Zhu Youzheng was nearly in tears.

“You brushed the infrared beam and triggered the alarm,” Bai Ge said with a helpless shrug.

She did not mean to blame Zhu Youzheng. How could an ordinary person notice such a subtle mechanism? What mattered now was what to do next.

“There’s no time to run,” Liang Bing said after sensing the surroundings. Dozens of people were rushing this way. Some were taking the elevator, while others had already blocked the emergency stairs. Even if they wanted to retreat, there was nowhere to go.

“The security response is even faster than we expected... Well, we’ll just have to deal with them,” Bai Ge said with a sigh.

Ling Zhe picked up the stun baton from the floor and swung it a few times to get a feel for it. Then he nodded toward Zhu Youzheng. “There are more weapons under the reception desk.”

Zhu Youzheng hurried over obediently and pulled out a stun baton as well. But he held it like a hot potato.

He had triggered the alarm, so he had to do his part and recover some dignity. But there were so few of them. Could they really handle this?

The elevator chimed open, and seven or eight security guards rushed out.

“Who are you people—” the leader had only just begun to speak when a hook punch smashed into his jaw.

A master could tell at a glance whether another was skilled.

Bai Ge rushed straight into their midst and seized the initiative, catching them completely off guard.

She caught one man’s arm, twisted it, and he cried out in agony, tears springing to his eyes. Before he could even shout, his head slammed into a companion, and both men toppled to the ground in a heap.

As that man struggled to get up, Bai Ge stamped on his back and used the rebound to launch a flying kick into another unlucky guard.

The moment she landed lightly, someone seized the opening and lunged at her. She turned with the motion and executed a clean over-the-shoulder throw, flattening him instantly.

Listening to the groans and cries of pain, watching them roll across the floor, Ling Zhe and Zhu Youzheng were utterly stunned.

No stopwatch was needed. Bai Ge had taken care of those seven or eight men in no more than a minute. What’s more, her movements were fluid and graceful, turning violence itself into something almost beautiful.

Bang. The emergency stairwell door burst open, and a group of men rushed out wielding bats.

Bai Ge plunged back into the fight, and this time Ling Zhe charged in as well.

“You’re not going?” Liang Bing asked Zhu Youzheng.

“I... I can’t.”

“You can. I’ll guide you.”

What?

The ever-cold Liang Bing was actually going to give him personal guidance?

After making sure he had not misheard, Zhu Youzheng immediately grinned from ear to ear.

This feeling... was incredible.

Different people liked different types. He had no interest in steady, mature older-sister types like Ling Lan, nor did he care for forceful, opinionated girls like Bai Ge. He was simply smitten with Liang Bing, the cool little loli with the frozen face.

Since she had already encouraged him, if he still did not step up, that would be far too cowardly!

Zhu Youzheng gathered his courage and shouted as he charged into the fray.

Five minutes later, the battle was over.

Looking at the people sprawled across the floor, Bai Ge panted a little and said, “We need to find some nitrogen and figure out a way to break the bulletproof glass.”

“It’s not over yet,” Liang Bing said after sensing again. More people were about to come up in the elevator.

“No matter how many come, we’ll take them all down!” Ling Zhe was fired up, feeling as though nothing could stop them now.

The elevator arrived, and five or six armed guards poured out.

Without a word, they raised their black gun barrels.

“Take cover behind the reception desk!” Bai Ge shouted.

No matter how high one’s martial skill, bullets and guns were still a threat. Closing in was impossible; they had to hide first.

Bang bang bang!

Gunfire erupted in unison. Ling Zhe was a beat too slow and took a bullet in the shoulder. Liang Bing and Zhu Youzheng hurriedly dragged him into cover.

“You okay?!”

“Still... manageable...” Ling Zhe sucked in a sharp breath.

“What do we do? They’re coming,” Liang Bing said nervously, hearing the faint, solid thud of their boots striking the floor.

“Don’t be scared!” Bai Ge bit down hard on her lip.

She knew those men had no intention of showing mercy. If they had meant to question them, they would not have opened fire so readily.

Ding.

Another elevator arrival.

Liang Bing suddenly let out a long breath. “He’s here.”

“Who?” Bai Ge did not understand at first; the remark came out of nowhere.

Bang.

A dull impact rang out. The guards were flung backward into the wall, blood spraying from their mouths and noses before they crumpled to the floor.

Was this a turn of events?

Bai Ge peeked out and saw Yi Chen standing in the back, his gaze razor-sharp and overwhelmingly commanding.

She did not know how he had struck. She only knew that in that instant, aside from him, no one on the field was still standing.

“How dare you open fire on my friends. This is the price,” Yi Chen said coldly.

Could he be any cooler?

Bai Ge’s lips curved, and she could not look away.

Others found that white hair and those mismatched eyes eerie and frightening. Why did she instead think they had a peculiar charm?

“Brother Chen, I’m your die-hard fan... You came at exactly the right time,” Ling Zhe said, clutching his wounded shoulder, forcing out a smile from his gaunt face.

“You still have the energy to joke. Looks like you’re not that badly hurt,” Yi Chen said with a twitch at the corner of his mouth.

Liang Bing walked over to the fallen guards and, hearing their faint breathing, confirmed they were all still alive. Only then did she relax. It was good that Yi Chen had not gone on a killing spree. It was clear he had already shown them mercy.

“You forced your way into the inner city?” Bai Ge noticed the many bullet holes in Yi Chen’s jacket.

“That’s nothing. The iron gates on the outer layer were breached by zombies, and the builders from Future City were repairing them overnight. Several of the doors were still open, so I just rushed straight in.” Yi Chen spoke lightly, leaving out many details. He had indeed taken quite a few bullets on the way.

“We need to move fast and figure out how to break this bulletproof glass. The alarm just went off, so Future Group will probably send more reinforcements,” Bai Ge said, no longer pressing for details.

“Step aside,” Yi Chen said, walking directly to the sealed glass door.

His sleeves were in tatters, and on his exposed arms strange black patterns had appeared at some unknown point.

Bai Ge’s thoughts shifted. A few days ago, when he had completely turned into a zombie, those same patterns had appeared on his body too.

She saw that his left eye was blood-red while his right eye remained unchanged. His expression was steady and calm, with no sign of losing control.

Could it be that he was now able to control that power?

Yi Chen drove his fist into the bulletproof glass. Spiderweb cracks instantly spread across it, and then with a thunderous crash, the whole pane shattered.

Everyone had been mentally prepared, but the deafening noise still made their hair stand on end.

Was this a joke? One punch, and it was done?

This was no time to stand there in a daze. Ling Zhe was the first to step over the shattered glass, and despite the pain he bared his teeth and shouted, “Sis!”

After calling out several more times, a voice finally answered from the innermost room.

“Is that Ling Zhe?”
