Chapter Eighty-Eight: Privilege
White Song surveyed the scene and saw that only several dozen zombies were trapped between the first and second levels.
“I thought it would be much more terrifying than this. With so few zombies, there’s no need for the corporation to send any more people,” she said, somewhat disappointed.
“Do you mean one reinforcement team is enough?” asked the operator in charge of contacting the corporation.
“No. I’m enough by myself.”
“You really are joking.” The operator gave an awkward chuckle.
White Song could not be bothered to keep talking to him. Back in the sewers, she had dealt with more zombies than this, not fewer.
“Keep the wire net powered. Prepare the high-pressure water guns,” White Song ordered.
Everyone got to work in orderly fashion.
The reinforcements had brought a lot of weapons and ammunition, but she did not think they would be needed. The wire net had such tightly packed mesh that bullets would have a hard time getting through to the zombies, and using them would also damage the defense barrier to some extent.
The last time she had defended the quarantine zone at the entrance to South River with a flamethrower, the result had been an enemy loss of a thousand and a self-inflicted loss of eight hundred. Now there were not many zombies at all. Since there were other ways to deal with them, there was no need to use brute force and damage the wire net.
The zombies, having recovered somewhat, started moving again. At White Song’s command, the water guns swept out, and currents of electricity converged in one place!
This time, aside from the zombies that were pressed directly against the wire net, the others behind them were also hit one by one. Their muscles convulsed, and they broke into a frantic dance.
“Cut the power. Open the gate,” White Song said through the communication device.
“What?” The guard in the control room thought he had misheard and asked again to confirm. Cutting the power was one thing, but opening the gate? What was that for—welcoming guests?
“Cut the power. Open the gate!” White Song repeated, forcing patience into her voice. Had the guards in the inner city grown so pampered that their heads had gone dull?
“What are you opening the gate for? In a situation like this...”
“I’m going out to kill the zombies.”
“...Alone?”
“Why so much useless talk? Am I the commander, or are you?”
“What if you get infected?”
“Then you shoot me.”
At last, the control room obeyed White Song’s seemingly absurd order.
The wire net slowly drew open a narrow gap to one side, and White Song darted out lightly.
The guards inside all held their guns at the ready, tense and prepared. If the commander could not be relied upon, then they had to be.
White Song wore nothing but a bulletproof vest.
The Future Group would not provide top-grade equipment for ordinary operations.
The last time they had undertaken the special mission to exterminate the Crawlers, the gear they had been given had already been reduced to rags under the claws and bites of the horde, and after several blast impacts it had become unusable.
White Song did not care in the least.
After that hellish rebirth of a trial, she now regarded all this as child’s play.
Besides, these zombies had already been shocked, their muscles convulsing; they were in no position to do anything.
Not to mention her— even if a few random guards came out from inside, they could easily deal with them. The reason no one dared to think or act on it was still that deep-rooted fear they could not overcome in their hearts.
Sometimes, what people fear is often only fear itself. They magnify the difficulty of things, thinking them impossible to face and impossible to cross.
White Song drew her dagger and, with a single slash apiece, cleaned up the zombies swiftly and neatly. Some of the zombies were still able to move; baring their teeth and reaching out with clawed hands, they lurched forward in a clumsy attack.
But who was she?
She was the top student of the police academy, and more than that, a combat elite who had personally cut down many zombies. How could they possibly be her match?
A few minutes later, more than half the zombies had been cleared away, and the ground was covered in the sticky gray matter they had spilled.
White Song’s skill left the crowd on the other side of the wire net staring in stunned silence. A woman with astonishing strength and courage that utterly dwarfed theirs.
Many of them were inspired and followed her through the wire net, raising their guns and rattling off bursts of fire, headshot after headshot, into the zombies.
“Busybodies,” White Song said. She had not expected anyone else to interfere, and now that she had some assistance, she did not feel particularly grateful.
After a bit of activity, she had worked up a sweat. At this level, it was only enough to serve as a warm-up.
“Sister White Song!” a cool, clear voice called to her from a corner.
White Song was surprised and went over to look. There, crouching together, were three people. She recognized one of them: Liang Bing, with her long blue hair and porcelain-doll beauty.
“What are you doing here? Is Yi Chen nearby too?” White Song did not know Ling Zhe or Zhu Youzheng, but since they were with Liang Bing, they were surely companions. She did not need to ask further.
Still, all those zombies had just been here, and they had come through unscathed. It was nothing short of a miracle.
Liang Bing nodded. “Yi Chen still has something to handle. He may come a little later. Could you take us into the inner city first?”
“You don’t have special passes?”
“I do.” The fat man raised his hand.
“Just one person having one isn’t much use. Come with me,” White Song said.
“...Just go in openly like that?” Ling Zhe found it hard to believe.
“Of course. I’m the commander, and right now I’m in charge. They have to listen to me.” White Song smiled.
Seeing Ling Zhe, she felt he looked vaguely familiar. Though this was their first meeting, she quickly guessed his identity.
“You’re Ling Zhe? Oh my, you really do look like your sister, especially those eyes!”
At the word “sister,” Ling Zhe’s gaze darkened. Without hesitation, he told White Song why they needed to enter the city.
Yi Chen had mentioned White Song to him, and Ling Lan and Liang Bing had spoken of her as well.
Ling Zhe knew some of her accomplishments, and he understood her connections and interactions with the others. Though they had never met, trust had already been established between them.
“My sister Ling Lan has been taken? I’m going with you to rescue her,” White Song said solemnly.
Just like Yi Chen, she immediately suspected Ouyang Hong.
“Much appreciated,” Ling Zhe said without ceremony. The more people they had, the more strength they carried.
White Song led them back, and as expected, they were stopped by the guards.
“Who are these people behind you?”
“Zhou Zihao’s classmates and cousin. Do you want to inspect them?” White Song shifted the burden onto Zhou Zihao without the slightest hesitation. No matter what she said or did, that fellow would be willing to clean up the mess.
“What are they doing here?” the guard pressed relentlessly.
“With your rank, you do not need to know so much. Am I the commander, or are you?” White Song glared at him.
She had already intimidated them with her strength, and everyone present knew that Zhou Zihao, the son of the Future Group chairman, was always ostentatious in his conduct. They also knew, to some degree, how he treated White Song.
If they offended the future bride of the Zhou family over something like this, they would be making enemies they could not afford to make.
The guards dared not speak further. After a quick glance and seeing no injuries on any of them, they had no choice but to obey and let them pass.
“Damn, they even skipped the part where medical staff check you over? Power and influence really are convenient,” Zhu Youzheng said with emotion.
