Chapter Forty: Nangong Yuchen, What Are You Doing!
Lying on the ground was a cute little girl with black twin ponytails. At that moment, however, her clothes were in tatters, and there were numerous wounds all over her body. It was impossible to tell whether she had merely fainted or had already died.
Nangong Yuchen first set his sister down, then bent over to check whether the girl still had any breath.
“Did she just pass out?” Nangong Yuchen wondered in confusion. In Ruxia City, who would dare lay a hand on the mayor’s daughter? More importantly, she was a first-rank mech warrior herself.
At that moment, Nangong Kexin came over as well and looked at the unfamiliar, adorable girl, unable to help asking, “...Yuchen? You know her?”
“Oh, yeah, I’ve seen her before, once when I was at work!” Nangong Yuchen replied a little absentmindedly. Then he began thinking whether he should save Shangguan Yueling. After all, they had once saved his life too.
“I see.” Nangong Kexin nodded, then suddenly thought of something and asked instinctively, “By the way, Nangong Yuchen, I remember you haven’t been to work for more than a month. Where did you get the money to take me to the hospital and buy clothes?”
“Huh?” Cold sweat immediately broke out on Nangong Yuchen’s forehead. He had forgotten about that. He really hadn’t been working during this time, so he should not have had any source of income at all. Yet the last trip to the hospital had already cost nearly ten thousand yuan, and now that his sister had suddenly asked him, he had no idea how to answer.
“Yuchen?” Nangong Kexin pressed again.
“Oh, I used to make money by working as a bodyguard for people. You know I can fight!” Nangong Yuchen quickly spun a response, then hurriedly changed the subject. “Kexin, let’s carry her home first!”
“Really?” Nangong Kexin felt something was off when she saw his flustered expression, and her suspicion deepened. Then she remembered the night when Zhou Haoran had chased them, and her pretty face darkened at once. “Also, what was that about the two assassination attempts Zhou Haoran mentioned last time?”
“Assassination?” Nangong Yuchen felt his heart tighten at her sudden question, but he still wore a careless smile and played dumb. “Just a few punks, that’s all. Let’s hurry and take her back home!”
Although Nangong Kexin still felt that something was wrong, she could not quite put her finger on it. Then, hearing her younger brother say he was taking the strange girl home, she asked with some doubt, “You’re not after her for something, are you?”
“She helped me before,” Nangong Yuchen explained briefly. Then he bent down, picked up Shangguan Yueling, and walked out of the woods with his sister.
Half an hour later, they finally emerged from the forest and returned to the road. Only then did they realize they had no idea where they had wandered to, nor where exactly this place was. With no other choice, they waited by the roadside for quite a while before finally flagging down a taxi.
Carrying Shangguan Yueling into the car, Nangong Yuchen gave the driver the address.
The taxi started up and sped toward the civilian residential district.
Not long after the three of them left, two figures also came out of the forest. A closer look revealed them to be Shangguan Youran and Mu Feng. At that moment, Shangguan Youran was already covered in wounds and had fallen unconscious. Mu Feng carried her over one shoulder, glanced in a direction, and then began running wildly in the opposite direction from Nangong Yuchen.
Less than a minute after the two left, three more figures appeared there.
Meila, Heidi, and another middle-aged man wearing glasses.
“Brother Lu Yun, that girl Shangguan Yueling should still be in the forest and hasn’t come out yet. Should we sweep through it again?” Heidi asked the middle-aged man in glasses before him.
“You can just send the beast troops under you to search. The three of us must kill Mu Feng today. Otherwise, once the alarm is raised, I’m afraid we won’t have another chance in the future. As for those two girls from the Shangguan family, kill them too if you can. If there’s no opportunity, forget it.”
The middle-aged man was called Lu Yun. He would not forget the mission the butler had given him, so after confirming Mu Feng’s escape route, he and the other two immediately gave chase toward the city.
...
By the time Nangong Yuchen carried Shangguan Yueling home with his sister, it was already past ten o’clock.
As soon as Nangong Kexin entered, she found a set of clothes and rushed into the bathroom to shower. There was no helping it; being as cleanliness-loving as she was, she could not stand the feeling of being filthy all over.
Nangong Yuchen could only place Shangguan Yueling gently on the bed. Seeing no sign that she would wake, he sat by the bedside and waited for Kexin to return.
More than ten minutes passed. Bored, Nangong Yuchen looked at Shangguan Yueling lying on the bed. He remembered that the last time she had introduced herself, she had claimed to be part of a reconnaissance team. Did Ruxia City really have that many beasts?
If so, why had he never heard of any beast attacks occurring in Ruxia City?
Or was it simply that the level of society he had touched so far was too low?
While he was lost in random thoughts, the little girl lying on the bed suddenly opened her bright, watery eyes.
“Where is Sister Lingling?”
Their eyes met. Nangong Yuchen had been thinking about something and was startled by her sudden words. Looking at the little girl blinking her eyes, he asked, “You’re awake?”
“You still haven’t answered me. Where is Sister Lingling?” Shangguan Yueling said as she sat up at once, eyeing Nangong Yuchen with some wariness.
“Sister Lingling?” Nangong Yuchen looked at her tender little face and helplessly shook his head. “This is my—”
Before he could finish, he was nearly choked to death by one sentence from the little girl.
“What a shabby place. Is this your home?”
Shangguan Yueling rolled her watery eyes around, examining the plain, small room, and curled her lips in disdain.
“You—”
“Eh? Why do I feel like I’ve seen you somewhere before?”
Nangong Yuchen’s words were blocked again.
“Oh right, Sister Lingling still has to hunt beasts!” Shangguan Yueling said. With a flash from her spatial ring, countless black cubes drifted out and began to gather, coil, and intertwine above her small shoulder.
“This is—” Nangong Yuchen had never seen such a thing up close before. His eyes widened as he watched the densely packed black cubes fuse together, as though assembling themselves into a giant sniper rifle.
Just as the black cubes were about to take shape, Shangguan Yueling’s little face suddenly paled, and the formation scattered, slipping back into the spatial ring.
“Oh no, Sister Lingling’s physical energy is used up!” After saying that, she fell straight back onto the bed.
Nangong Yuchen stood frozen in place, staring dumbly at everything that had happened. He had been full of anticipation, wondering what kind of mech equipment would appear, and then in the blink of an eye, it was gone...
It left him feeling as though someone had taken off his pants only to show him that.
“What do I do? I still need to go save my sister and Uncle!” Shangguan Yueling tried several times to sit up, but failed each time. She was simply too weak.
Nangong Yuchen, standing nearby, looked at her with a face full of black lines. At this moment, he felt that rescuing this little girl had been a mistake.
“Oh, I remember now. Aren’t you that foolish kid from the coffee shop last time?” Shangguan Yueling suddenly had a flash of inspiration and looked at Nangong Yuchen in delight.
“Foolish kid?” Nangong Yuchen’s face had gone completely dark. He was already considering whether, while the girl had not yet recovered her strength, he should throw her out from the sixth floor. Otherwise, once her physical energy recovered tomorrow, wouldn’t that be disastrous?
“Heehee, foolish kid, tell me, how are you going to repay Sister Lingling for saving your life?” Lying on the bed, Shangguan Yueling wriggled like a little worm until she was beside Nangong Yuchen, revealing her tiny tiger teeth.
Nangong Yuchen truly could not take it anymore. He simply turned his back on her and pretended not to hear anything she said.
“Tch, what a miser. The moment I mention repayment, you ignore me. At this rate, you’ll never get a girlfriend!”
Shangguan Yueling tilted her little face away, full of scorn, and angered Nangong Yuchen so badly that he began trembling all over. Then he turned around at once, clenched his fist, and knocked her on the forehead, roaring, “Shut up!”
“Ow, ow... You dare hit Sister Lingling!” Shangguan Yueling clutched her forehead, furious, and was about to fight Nangong Yuchen to the death. After so many years, she had never once suffered a loss.
At that very moment, Nangong Kexin walked out of the bathroom in her pajamas. Hearing the noise from the bedroom, she could not help asking through the wall, “Nangong Yuchen, did that girl wake up?”
“There’s another woman? Is she this foolish kid’s girlfriend?” Shangguan Yueling glanced sideways at Nangong Yuchen. Then inspiration struck her, and a sly little tiger tooth appeared at the corner of her mouth, though this time her smile was rather wicked.
Because she had thought of how to get revenge.
Tap, tap.
Nangong Kexin, wearing slippers, came closer and closer. Just as she was about to enter the room, Shangguan Yueling suddenly grabbed Nangong Yuchen’s hand and placed it on her own modestly rising chest, even using his hand to squeeze it forcefully once.
“You—” Nangong Yuchen instinctively tried to break free, but Shangguan Yueling was gripping him tightly. Just as he was about to exert force, Nangong Kexin walked in.
At the same time, Shangguan Yueling’s gem-like eyes turned slightly red as she said pitifully, “Don’t...”
The moment Nangong Kexin entered, she saw her younger brother’s hand grabbing the little girl’s soft chest, and she heard that aggrieved voice.
Her beautiful face instantly flushed with anger as she shouted, “Nangong Yuchen! What are you doing!”
