Chapter 75: Visiting the Prison
As these words fell, Nangong Yuchen and Nangong Kexin were both struck by a sudden jolt. Recalling what had just transpired, a profound sense of guilt began to well up within them.
It was true—they were siblings, yet they had engaged in such intimate acts. The more they dwelled on it, the more they felt it was a transgression.
The elderly landlord, seeing them frozen, assumed he had seen through their ruse. He chuckled, "Haha, do siblings sleep together and do such things? Come on, young man, a man needs to take responsibility. It’s just that, isn’t it? I’m an old hand at this, heh heh..."
Having said that, he patted Nangong Yuchen on the shoulder and added, "Alright, I won’t get in the way of your fun any longer. Hurry up and give me the rent; if I go back too late, the old woman will start nagging me again!"
"Oh, right..." Nangong Yuchen, still consumed by that suffocating guilt, subconsciously reached into his pocket, pulled out five hundred yuan, and handed it over.
The old landlord pocketed the money and walked toward the door with a grin. However, just as he stepped out, he felt as if something was missing from the room. A second thought struck him, and he turned around, shouting at Nangong Yuchen, "Hey kid, where is my door?"
Nangong Yuchen was shaken from his daze, only then remembering the bedroom door he had torn off a month ago. He awkwardly replied, "...I took it off."
"Took it off? Pay up for it, right now!" The old landlord, displaying his miserly nature, grabbed at Nangong Yuchen, demanding compensation.
Helpless, Nangong Yuchen had no choice but to fork over another five hundred yuan to finally send this plague of a man on his way.
After returning to the room and locking up, Nangong Yuchen walked into the bedroom. Seeing Nangong Kexin huddled in her quilt, staring blankly ahead, he said with a heavy, pained heart, "Ke... Kexin, I'm sorry!"
The words hung in the air, and the room fell into silence once more. Nangong Yuchen had no choice but to steel himself, walk to the bedside, retrieve his own quilt, and lie down on his makeshift floor bed.
A long time passed. Seeing that his sister remained unresponsive, Nangong Yuchen did not know how to break the silence. After a moment of thought, he could only offer a helpless suggestion: "Kexin, get some... rest. You still have to move tomorrow!"
"You don't... need to remind me!" Nangong Kexin replied, her voice cold. She clicked off the light and burrowed deeper into her quilt.
"..." Nangong Yuchen opened his mouth to say something, but ultimately held back. The events of just a moment ago made it impossible for him to face her.
In the pitch-black room, while Nangong Yuchen lay in distress, Nangong Kexin was curled up under her covers, weeping silently. She hadn't originally thought much of it—she had simply wanted to get rid of her flat chest—but who could have predicted that the landlord’s interruption would lead to such a predicament?
She had no idea how to face Nangong Yuchen now. On one hand, there was the crushing guilt of their sibling bond; on the other, a sense of betrayal and self-reproach toward Xia Juli.
And so, the two spent the night in silence until the arrival of Sunday morning.
"No! Dad... Mom! Sob..."
In his sleep, Nangong Yuchen seemed to hear bursts of sobbing. As the commotion grew, he was startled awake. Fearing that something had happened, he sat up abruptly.
"Get away, hurry... sob, I don't want you to die..."
"Kexin?" Nangong Yuchen felt a sense of disorientation. He looked at his sister, who was lying on the bed and sobbing incessantly. He quickly got up and walked over, asking with concern, "Kexin, what's wrong?"
However, Nangong Kexin did not respond; she continued to weep.
Nangong Yuchen realized she was having a nightmare. With a bitter smile, he patted her shoulder, intending to wake her.
But the moment he touched her, she suddenly grabbed him, crying out, "Yuchen, hurry and save Mom and Dad! They’re buried underneath! Sob!"
"…Kexin!" Nangong Yuchen’s voice was loud, finally pulling her out of the nightmare.
"Dad..." Nangong Kexin opened her eyes, her expression one of lingering terror. She murmured, "Yuchen, hurry and save Mom and Dad!" It was clear she hadn't fully awakened from the nightmare.
"..." Watching his sister, her face streaked with tears like a smudged painting, Nangong Yuchen felt a pang of heartache. "Kexin, what's wrong?"
After a while, Nangong Kexin replied, "Sob... Yuchen, I dreamed that Ruxia City had been breached by spirit beasts, and Mom and Dad were buried in the prison... sob!"
Nangong Yuchen frowned. After hearing her out, he comforted her softly, "How could spirit beasts breach the city? You’re just overthinking things, Kexin. Mom and Dad will be fine!"
"But... the dream..."
"It’s alright, it was just a dream. Don't worry, in a little while, our family will be reunited!" Nangong Yuchen gently wiped the tears from her face. In truth, he felt a deep resistance to any bad news regarding their parents.
"Oh..." Nangong Kexin’s mood remained low, and she allowed Nangong Yuchen to gently wipe away her tears.
Once he had carefully dried her face, Nangong Kexin also began to emerge from her sorrow. Looking at him at such close range and feeling his gentle palm, her face flushed with heat as she remembered the events of the previous night.
Nangong Kexin was incredibly shy. Ordinarily, she would have slapped him away, but this time she didn't. Instead, she pulled away from his hand, trembling, and asked, "…Nangong Yuchen, what are you doing?"
"Er..." Nangong Yuchen had just let out a sigh of relief, but upon hearing this, he quickly pulled his hand back in embarrassment. In truth, he hadn't thought much of it; he had simply felt heartbroken for her and wiped her tears instinctively. But after last night, it was clear that both of them were far too sensitive to such intimacy. They could never return to their former nonchalance.
Half an hour passed, and after washing up, they began to pack their luggage together.
Just then, Nangong Kexin lowered her head and said, "Yuchen, could we go see Mom and Dad first? I miss them."
Nangong Yuchen was silent for a few seconds, then nodded in agreement. "Yes."
After they finished packing, Nangong Yuchen carried the luggage for her, and they left the residential area, hailing a taxi on the roadside.
"Where to?"
"District A Prison!" Nangong Yuchen replied coldly.
The driver was momentarily stunned, then cast a strange look at the pair before starting the car and heading toward District A Prison.
District A Prison was responsible for holding every criminal in Ruxia City, regardless of the severity of their crimes. It was located in the far west of District A, not far from the City of Technology—though most ordinary citizens were unaware of the City of Technology’s existence, as it was not a place accessible to just anyone. As for the siblings, had they not been promoted to special students on Friday, they would have had no qualifications to visit the prison.
The atmosphere in the car was stifling. Nangong Kexin knew that mentioning their parents made Nangong Yuchen uncomfortable, but the dream from that morning weighed heavily on her mind. Now, all she wanted was to see them.
After entering the urban area of District B, traffic began to thicken, resulting in a full hour-and-a-half journey before they finally reached District A Prison.
After paying the fare, Nangong Yuchen stood on the roadside with their luggage, looking at the towering high walls and the tightly shut, pitch-black gates ahead, and came to a halt.
Since this was their first time here, they had had to take a taxi.
"Nangong Yuchen, are Mom and Dad being held here?" Nangong Kexin’s emotions fluctuated upon seeing the scene.
"Yes," Nangong Yuchen nodded, taking the lead and walking forward with heavy steps. Just as they were less than ten meters from the prison gates, the black doors suddenly swung open, and a fully equipped military unit marched out.
"Click!" A dozen black assault rifles were aimed directly at them.
Helpless, the siblings had to stop in their tracks and stand their ground, explaining, "We are here for a prison visit!"
