Chapter 166: A Promising Seed, Potential Score of 98!
The show "Guess Who I Am" previously faced two major points of contention.
First, it was too easy to guess. The participating actors could barely disguise their vocal timbres or singing styles. Often, they would be completely exposed within just a few lines, leaving the audience with no suspense, which was quite dull.
Second, most of the participants were big-name stars with incredible, heaven-defying talent. Unfortunately, the judges only focused on guessing identities rather than providing specific critiques of their performances. In this regard, it differed drastically from most music variety shows. However, innovation doesn't always equate to quality, and many viewers had complained about wanting to see actual performance evaluations.
Since this was the grand finale, it naturally needed to be something special—or, one might say, something more magnificent. Every guest invited was a powerhouse with real skill, determined to give the live-stream audience a spectacular show.
Sure enough, when the host announced this, everyone became excited, and even the judges began to prepare themselves. The popularity of the live stream jumped to a new level, climbing steadily from thirteen million viewers. At this rate, surpassing the peak of "I Am an Actor" would be no problem at all; it might even set a new record for the highest viewership in the history of music variety shows.
It wasn't that the program was inherently perfect, but it was fortunate enough to catch a wave of momentum amidst a series of coincidences. Director Wu Youliang attached great importance to this, and once the main tone for the final episode was set, the show officially began.
Clearly, Bai Ling was saved for the finale. After all, she had participated in three consecutive episodes and successfully kept her identity a mystery the entire time; both logically and emotionally, she was the one who should appear last.
As in previous episodes, Bai Ling silently watched the performances from the lounge. Because it was the grand finale, the singers who appeared were all incredibly talented—some were even of the same caliber as veteran mentors Han Guangming and Li Yuanhong. The songs they brought were soul-stirring and deeply admirable. Of course, such heavyweights inevitably ended up on the judging panel.
Perhaps because of these high-quality performances, the audience chose not to leave, even though they knew "Doraemon" (Bai Ling's alias) would be the final act. The viewership of the live stream continued to soar, and when Bai Ling curiously checked, she found it had already hit the thirty-million mark—and was still climbing!
"Truly terrifying!"
Starting from this point, "Guess Who I Am" had already crushed the vast majority of other variety shows. Another climax of this episode was the appearance of a particular female singer. Bai Ling had an impression of her.
"If I remember correctly, she successfully advanced in the last episode, too. It’s just that her performance back then wasn't stunning enough to cause much of a stir."
She was one of only two singers, besides Bai Ling, to successfully advance. Initially, no one had any real expectations for her performance, as her strength clearly didn't seem to be on the same level as the others. People assumed she was just a newcomer who had advanced by relying on the advantage of being lesser-known.
However, to everyone's shock, this singer displayed terrifying strength upon taking the stage. Her vocal technique had improved significantly compared to the previous episode. Furthermore, her high notes were incredibly powerful, almost approaching the state Bai Ling was in when she sang "A Diao."
Consequently, as the judges applauded her, they began to make bold guesses.
"Could you be Bai Ling?"
"If it is Bai Ling, that would be interesting."
Regrettably, when the mask was removed, it revealed a relatively fresh and youthful face.
"Hello, everyone. I am Yu Wenyan, a music major who just graduated this year."
In an instant, everyone was stunned.
"A student who graduated this year?"
"Is she really a newcomer?"
"Wow, she looks so green; I bet she hasn't been on stage many times."
"I thought it might be Bai Ling, but it turns out she’s another genius."
"Is it a year for geniuses and monsters to emerge?"
"This girl has a bit of Bai Ling's shadow in her; perhaps her future is worth looking forward to."
The judges thought the same. If Yu Wenyan were just a relatively obscure singer, one brilliant performance might be considered normal, and they would at most offer an objective comment. But for a genuine newcomer, it was a different story. Immediately, mentors Han Guangming and Li Yuanhong offered her encouragement. Yu Wenyan stood on stage with a flushed face, looking deeply moved.
In the lounge, Bai Ling watched the situation with a sense of wonder. Suddenly, she thought of a possibility and took out a pair of glasses—the very reward she had received just yesterday.
Putting on the glasses and looking at Yu Wenyan, a wealth of information instantly appeared before her eyes:
[Yu Wenyan]
[22 years old]
[Graduate of the Central Academy of Music and Arts, top-tier grades]
[Vocal ability: 84]
[Growth potential: 98]
[Suitable genre: Love songs]
[Suitable style: Soft]
[Recommended career: Singer]
[Current status: Signed with Xinghui Entertainment, but the contract is not restrictive]
Bai Ling was ecstatic. What a promising talent! A vocal score of 84 was already quite impressive. While it becomes exponentially harder to improve as one nears a perfect score, she was already a highly qualified pop singer. Furthermore, a potential score of 98 meant she had the credentials to become a true first-line female singer, with even more room to climb.
Bai Ling had originally intended to use this reward to see if there were any actors suitable for her new drama. She hadn't found any actors, but she had discovered such a promising talent during this program.
Although Bai Ling's personal studio was built around her and had even established a film and television department, that didn't mean she wanted to focus solely on acting. She also intended to have a hand in the music scene. Why did she write songs for Leng Yan? Wasn't it because she had a massive library of songs that weren't all suitable for her?
So, it was better to go with the flow and give them to Leng Yan. She got the signing fee, and she didn't even have to sing the songs herself—she just had to provide the sheet music and lyrics. It was a deal that couldn't be more cost-effective.
However, although Leng Yan was a good friend, he wasn't an employee of her own company. Thus, Bai Ling was very eager to cultivate some suitable singers of her own. This girl right here was excellent.
"After the show ends, I must reach out to her. Hehe!"
