“Dad, what are you talking about? Isn’t the Qin family doing well? Why would we suddenly have to pay compensation?” Qin Wanyi asked in confusion. She did not know much about the company. The last time she had visited, she had heard that they were negotiating a major project.

That was why Qin Wanyi refused to believe they were facing financial losses.

“Besides, there are countless companies in the world. It’s not as if we have to work with the Jiang family.”

Her father sighed repeatedly. “There are some things I haven’t told you because I was afraid of putting pressure on you.”

“The Qin family isn’t what it used to be. These days, many of our projects depend entirely on the Jiang family. And then, at a time like this, you two decided to divorce. Just look at the mess it’s created.”

Qin Wanyi frowned and fell silent. She truly had no idea how the Qin family was doing now.

Her father turned to her, took her hand, and clasped it tightly, his heart aching for her. “Wanyi, I’m begging you. Stop being so headstrong. Lin Xiaoxiao is your younger sister, after all, and Jiang Yi himself said that he has always regarded Xiaoxiao as his sister. There’s really nothing going on between them.”

Qin Wanyi rolled her eyes speechlessly. Only her father could believe such nonsense.

Without saying a word, she calmly took out her phone and tossed the evidence she had collected onto the table in front of him.

“Take a good look. This is what you call having no improper relationship—treating her like a sister.”

Her father stared at the phone in astonishment. After hesitating for several seconds, he picked it up and began scrolling through the images one by one.

She had not deliberately investigated anything. The pictures had been sent to her by Lin Xiaoxiao, who had intentionally provoked her.

Some showed the two of them leaning against each other in bathrobes. Others were pictures taken after they had indulged themselves together.

There were even more suggestive images, but after looking through only a few, her father’s old face flushed crimson. He could not bear to look any longer.

He angrily tossed the phone onto the sofa and began pounding his chest, cursing Lin Xiaoxiao furiously.

“That shameless woman! She knew Jiang Yi had a wife. How could she dare?”

“Oh, what am I supposed to do with this old face of mine?” His face was burning red. In all his years, this was the first time he had felt such an overwhelming urge to crawl into a hole and hide.

Qin Wanyi calmly retrieved her phone, seemingly long accustomed to the two of them behaving this way.

She sat back down on the sofa and gently linked her arm through her father’s. Raising a brow, she looked at the anger on his face. “You can’t even handle a few pictures?”

Her father sighed again and again, feeling too ashamed to face her.

“You already knew about this?” While looking at the pictures, he had accidentally noticed the dates on them.

That meant the two of them had been carrying on for quite some time. Then Qin Wanyi…

He could not imagine how devastated Qin Wanyi must have been when she learned the truth.

After all, she had once gone to extraordinary lengths to marry Jiang Yi and had loved him deeply.

“Yes. It happened a long time ago.” Qin Wanyi’s expression remained calm, as though the matter had nothing to do with her.

“Something this serious happened, and you didn’t tell me? If I had known that girl had such intentions sooner, I… Just wait until I get my hands on her!” Her father clenched his fists so hard that his knuckles cracked.

Seeing this, Qin Wanyi felt faintly comforted.

“All right, I’m not even that angry anymore. Do you really need to be this furious? Besides, I want to divorce Jiang Yi for reasons beyond this.”

Her father was even more bewildered. Qin Wanyi had once loved Jiang Yi so desperately that she had thrown tantrums and insisted on marrying him at all costs.

Yet only a few years had passed, and she seemed to have become an entirely different person.

She saw the confusion in her father’s eyes and knew that he would not let the matter rest unless she explained herself.

With a sigh, she poured herself a glass of water and moistened her throat.

“I admit that I was young and ignorant back then. I naively thought that having feelings for Jiang Yi meant I loved him. That was why I disregarded everything else and kept pestering you to let me marry him.”

Her father looked at his daughter with a complicated expression. His heart felt as though something were lodged inside it, making it unbearably painful.

“After being treated coldly for so many years, I used to innocently think that Jiang Yi was simply incapable.” As she spoke, Qin Wanyi’s gaze drifted into the distance, a trace of chill entering her eyes.

Then she suddenly let out a self-mocking laugh. “It was only later that I realized he was perfectly capable with other people. I was the only one he couldn’t do anything with.”

“Wanyi.” Her father’s heart ached at her words, and tears welled in his eyes.

“You saw it yourself just now. He and Lin Xiaoxiao have been getting up to all sorts of things.”

Her father had nothing to say. He lowered his head and let out a deep sigh.

Fortunately, it was all in the past. Qin Wanyi had finally seen through the scoundrel Jiang Yi, and it was not too late for her to divorce him.

“I’m free now that I’ve divorced him. Next time I choose someone, I’ll make sure to keep my eyes open.”

“But you can’t interfere with my choice of the person I love.”

Her father turned toward Qin Wanyi, seemingly wanting to say something. Then he glanced at the man who was still standing nearby.

His expression suddenly turned solemn. Recalling what Qin Wanyi had just said, he broke out in a cold sweat.

Wanyi had said so much just now. Could she really be planning to get together with that brat?

No!

“I will not agree to you being with him!” Her father stated his position bluntly.

Qin Wanyi did not even realize what he meant by refusing.

Her father immediately pulled her hand into his and held it tightly. “You’re the precious daughter I raised and cherished above all else. With your status, you could marry anyone you wanted. Anyone except this bodyguard!”

“If you actually marry him, where am I supposed to put this old face of mine?” Her father excitedly patted his cheeks.

Only then did Qin Wanyi belatedly understand. Her father had assumed she and Pei Yinian were together.

Remembering the absurd mess caused by her drunken antics earlier, her cheeks flushed.

“How about this? I’ll replace him with someone else. Out of sight, out of mind. That should put an end to this idea of yours.”

After much thought, her father finally came up with what he considered a reasonable compromise.

The moment he finished speaking, Qin Wanyi objected. “No, I refuse!”

Both her father and Pei Yinian were stunned by her reaction.

For one brief moment, Pei Yinian’s heart skipped a beat. He thought that after spending so many years by Qin Wanyi’s side, caring for her and obeying her every command, she must have developed some affection for him. Perhaps that was why she had refused.

Meanwhile, her father’s entire face darkened. He stared at his daughter with wide, disbelieving eyes.

“What did you say?” he stammered.

Only then did Qin Wanyi realize that she had gone too far. But the words had already left her mouth, and there was no taking them back.

“What I mean is that there’s absolutely no need for that. He’s only a bodyguard. How could I possibly be interested in him?”

Her words were like a basin of cold water poured over Pei Yinian’s heart, instantly extinguishing the burning hope that had filled his chest.

Naively, he had believed that after all the years he had spent at Qin Wanyi’s side, protecting her and obeying her every command, there would at least be some affection between them.

In the end, he was the only fool.

But it did not matter. He had his own ways of making Qin Wanyi agree.
