Chapter 16: Self-Sufficiency

Now fully awake, Song Yanzi hurriedly handed over the phone. By then, the man was already awake.
He regarded her with an unhurried, amused expression.
Song Yanzi mouthed, “Your phone,” gesturing for him to answer it.
But instead of taking it, the man placed both hands beneath his head and lay back, looking as though he expected her to deal with the trouble she had caused herself.
After roughly ten seconds of silence, Sheng Zhiyi spoke from the other end. “Yichi, are you there?”
Since she could not count on him, Song Yanzi had no choice but to bite the bullet and handle it herself.
She sat up, quickly composed herself, and replied in a calm, unhurried voice, “Hello, Miss Sheng. I’m Linda, President Shen’s secretary. President Shen is in a meeting and isn’t available to take your call.”
She had come up with the idea on the spur of the moment, hoping it would get her through the situation.
A flicker passed through Shen Yichi’s eyes. He was quick to catch on.
There was a brief pause on the other end before Sheng Zhiyi asked doubtfully, “He’s busy this early?”
Song Yanzi remained perfectly composed. “Yes. President Shen has quite a lot to deal with today. Is there something you need? I can pass along a message.”
She lied without so much as a change in expression.
A trace of mischief flashed through the eyes of the man watching the show beside her.
The next second, he sat up and wrapped his arms around her from behind.
The sudden movement nearly made her cry out, but fortunately, she managed to steady herself.
“Actually, it’s nothing important,” Sheng Zhiyi said. “I won’t trouble you.”
Shen Yichi’s warm, broad palm began wandering over her body, leaving a trail of tingling sensations wherever it went.
Song Yanzi forced herself to remain calm. “Once President Shen is finished, I’ll have him contact you.”
The man buried his face in the hollow of her neck and became even bolder, slowly kissing and sucking at her skin.
Her camisole nightdress only made it easier for him to cause trouble.
Song Yanzi thought bitterly, He refuses to help, and now he’s deliberately making things worse.
Sheng Zhiyi’s voice was gentle. “If he’s busy, then never mind. Please ask him to call me back later.”
Song Yanzi was just about to respond when the man teasingly nipped her ear.
The damp warmth of it sent a tingling sensation through her, and she could not help shivering.

Song Yanzi discreetly drew in a breath, doing her best to keep her voice steady. “All right. I’ll be sure to tell President Shen.”
She quickly ended the call, tossed the phone aside, and pushed him away.
Her tone was slightly cold. “You did that on purpose, didn’t you?”
Shen Yichi looked entirely justified. “You answered the wrong call. Naturally, you have to solve the trouble you caused yourself.”
It was rare to see her so nervous and flustered. He found it amusing.
Song Yanzi was rendered speechless.
Yet he was so reasonable that she could not refute him.
Shen Yichi chuckled. “You sounded quite convincing.”
Fortunately, she had met Linda before and remembered her well. Otherwise, her lie might have been exposed.
Song Yanzi curved her lips. “The immediate problem is solved. As for how you explain everything afterward, that’s your concern.”
He could explain the rest to Sheng Zhiyi himself. It had nothing to do with her.
After saying that, she prepared to get out of bed. The man slipped an arm around her waist and pulled her back, laying her directly on the bed as he loomed over her.
Song Yanzi raised a hand to hold back his head as he leaned in to kiss her. Her breathing was uneven as she reminded him, “It’s getting late.”
If they continued fooling around, being late was inevitable.
More importantly, she truly had no energy left.
A meaningful look swirled in Shen Yichi’s eyes as he teased, “We’ll make it quick.”
He moved her hand aside, pinned both her wrists down, and bent to kiss her.
Song Yanzi turned her head, so his kiss landed on her cheek.
“Don’t. I have a very important meeting this morning.”
The man drew back, then gently grasped her chin and turned her face toward him.
“Should I remind you of the terms in the agreement, Ms. Second Party?”
Again, it was that non-negotiable command.
If she had not been desperate at the time, she never would have signed such an unfair agreement.
Song Yanzi wrapped her arms around him and softened her tone. “I’m hungry.”

She knew how to assess the situation. Since force would not work, she could only try tenderness.
Shen Yichi looked at her with layered meaning. “So am I.”
Song Yanzi pretended not to understand his implication. “Then why aren’t you getting up to make breakfast?”
Knowing she was doing it deliberately, the man leaned close to her ear and whispered, “I’m not hungry for food. I’m hungry in another way.”
His warm breath brushed against her ear like an electric current, quickly spreading through her and making her heart race.
Song Yanzi’s face grew hot. “Take care of it yourself.”
Shen Yichi kissed her tenderly. “With you here, I can give my hands the day off.”
His words made Song Yanzi blush even more deeply.
After a brief standoff, she was the one who finally gave in.
What choice did she have? He was the First Party, after all—and they were on his turf.
Men in the morning were truly outrageous.
By the time she had washed up and gone downstairs, the satisfied man had already prepared breakfast for her.
Since she had driven his car the night before, Shen Yichi took her to work.
He had also prepared clothes for her, so Song Yanzi did not need to return to her apartment.
When they were still some distance from the company, Song Yanzi asked him to stop.
Shen Yichi brought the car to a halt. “Are you really that afraid of being discovered?”
Song Yanzi unfastened her seat belt and answered with a question of her own. “Aren’t you afraid?”
“Afraid of what? If they find out, then—”
Without thinking, Song Yanzi cut him off. “Thank you for driving me.”
Then she got out of the car without the slightest hesitation.
The man watched her leave with a complicated expression.
Only after she had disappeared from sight did he start the car again.
