023. The Marvelous Uses of the Everlasting Spring Technique
Lin Shan had previously seen a video on Hua Xiong’s computer of him and Ruan Yan "battling" each other. Now, seeing the real person standing right before him, the images he had witnessed couldn't help but flood back into his mind.
Seeing Liu Ying ruining her scheme, Ruan Yan immediately snapped in annoyance, "Liu Ying, this is my patient. What business is it of yours? Do you even know their condition? You’re just voicing your opinions—why don't you take over, then?"
Ruan Yan had been eyeing this elderly couple for a long time. They had no children and lived very frugally, but in reality, they were quite wealthy, owning a property in a prime location and possessing significant cash savings. She had set her sights on draining every penny they had. Having finally persuaded them, she was furious that Liu Ying had undone her work with a single sentence.
Liu Ying retorted indignantly, "I am speaking the truth. This elderly gentleman requires conservative treatment. The medication you recommended has side effects that are far too severe; he simply cannot handle them."
Their bickering soon drew a crowd of onlookers in the ward. Liu Ying usually had a good reputation, and the elderly couple began to waver. They asked Ruan Yan timidly, "Dr. Ruan, perhaps we should just leave it?"
Ruan Yan’s eyebrows arched in anger. She scoffed, "Fine! I’ve already given my medical advice. If you choose not to listen to me, that’s your business. If any complications arise later, don’t come looking for me—go to her instead!" She pointed a finger at Liu Ying.
The elderly couple felt a surge of fear; after all, Ruan Yan was still their attending physician.
"You!" Liu Ying was exasperated. Turning to see the plea for help in the old couple's eyes, her heart softened. "Fine, I’ll do it. Transfer the old gentleman’s files to me."
Ruan Yan gave a cold, mocking laugh. "Be my guest. I’d love to see how you intend to treat him." With that, she turned and left the ward.
Liu Ying looked dejected. Lin Shan walked over to her side and asked, "Are you alright?"
Liu Ying managed a forced smile, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear. "I’ve made a spectacle of myself."
Lin Shan shook his head. "You are a true healer."
Liu Ying gave a self-deprecating smile. She knew very well that taking on this task would likely be a thankless job. Yet, the lessons from her childhood, the teachings of her professors, and a sense of medical ethics not yet eroded by a materialistic society compelled her to speak up.
The elderly couple turned to Liu Ying and said, "Dr. Liu, we trust you. We will do whatever you say. Just tell us what medicine to take!"
Though the couple was usually quiet, they could see clearly that Liu Ying was a doctor who truly prioritized her patients. In her eyes, they were people in need of care, not just walking piggy banks to be smashed, as they were in Ruan Yan’s eyes.
Seeing the trust in their eyes, the gloom in Liu Ying’s heart lifted. She smiled, "Grandma, Grandpa, I will do everything in my power."
Before she could finish her sentence, the old man’s expression suddenly changed. He let out a gasp and coughed up a mouthful of blood, staining the white bedsheets bright red.
No one had expected such a sudden turn of events. Liu Ying was momentarily stunned, but Lin Shan was the first to react, pressing the emergency call button. The old man was immediately rushed into the emergency room.
As Lin Shan watched the old man being wheeled away, he approached Lin Jiabao, who sighed, "I wonder if old Mr. Deng will pull through this time..."
Through Lin Jiabao, Lin Shan learned that the man was named Deng An. Lin Shan suddenly recalled that the medical knowledge Lu Yun had passed to him included a chapter on treating pneumonia. In the system of Traditional Chinese Medicine, all illnesses were considered the result of external pathogens invading the body; by clearing the meridians and circulating vital energy, one could heal oneself.
However, the techniques in Lu Yun’s medical book were unusable by others because they all required the "Evergreen Gong" as a foundation. While he couldn't cure his father’s cancer completely, he could use the Evergreen Gong to nourish his body, which would certainly improve his constitution and increase the chances of a successful recovery in the future.
With this in mind, Lin Shan said to Lin Jiabao, "Dad, I learned a bit of massage therapy a few days ago. Let me try it on you."
Lin Jiabao laughed, "You know how to do that? Sure..." He didn't expect the massage to have any real effect, but he wouldn't refuse his son’s gesture of filial piety.
Lin Wei chimed in, "Brother, be careful! Don't break Dad's bones!"
"Just watch!"
Lin Shan extended his hands, recalling the contents of the medical book. He placed his palms on Lin Jiabao’s lower abdomen and began to channel the Evergreen Gong to regulate his energy.
"Oh..." Lin Jiabao’s face showed immediate surprise. Lin Wei asked from the side, "Dad, how does it feel?" She, too, assumed it was just a placebo.
Lin Jiabao chuckled, "I have to say, it feels quite comfortable. It’s as if Ah Shan has two little flames in his palms..."
Lin Shan replied, "I told you I really learned something; don't doubt me."
He continued the process for about half an hour. By the end, Lin Jiabao’s condition had improved visibly. His complexion, which had been pale and weak, was now much ruddier, and he looked full of vitality.
Lin Jiabao stared at Lin Shan in shock. "Ah Shan... where did you learn this? I feel like I did before I ever got sick."
Lin Shan wiped the beads of sweat from his forehead, happy to see the change in his father. "An old master taught me, Dad. Since it works, I’ll treat you every day."
Seeing the results, Lin Wei clamored for a session too. Lin Shan, looking at his sister’s maturing figure, naturally declined the request. Claiming he needed to sleep, he lied down and entered the "Other World."
He continued to study the medical texts left by Lu Yun. Two days passed in the other world. When he returned to the main world, he found Deng An had been brought back. Lin Shan noticed the commotion immediately.
Back in the room, besides Deng An, he found Ruan Yan, Liu Ying, and Hua Xiong. Hua Xiong looked at the unconscious Deng An with a grim expression. "What happened?"
Before Liu Ying could speak, Ruan Yan immediately began to complain. "Dean Hua, it’s all Liu Ying’s fault. I had already improved the treatment plan, but Liu Ying interfered and prevented the patient from following it. She should take full responsibility!"
Liu Ying finally snapped back, "This has nothing to do with that!"
