Chapter 57 Is Such a Move Even Possible?
"I'll go get you another pair." Qin Ruowei stood up and left very sensibly.
At this moment, Lin Bai could no longer hold it in. He slammed his fist heavily onto the dining table, causing soup to splatter everywhere.
"Do you really think I don't dare to die? You always use this to threaten me!"
[Beep! It's not a threat, it's encouragement.]
"Bullshit! Would you listen to the ghost of a task you just issued? Letting Qin Ruowei and Li Ruonan know about each other and coexist peacefully! Is that human language? If you want me dead, just say so!"
Lin Bai had truly had enough.
However...
[Beep! I was never human to begin with.]
Lin Bai: "..."
"You win!"
Qin Ruowei came back with a new pair of chopsticks and handed them to Lin Bai. "Here, hurry up and eat. It won't taste good if it gets cold."
Lin Bai took the chopsticks and looked at Qin Ruowei, who had her head lowered while eating. His heart felt as though a jar of five flavors had been overturned, agonizing to the extreme.
It was bad enough that he had cheated on her behind her back, but now he was supposed to let her know! And even make her accept the existence of another woman and coexist peacefully.
Was he even human? He was worse than an animal, wasn't he?
"Lin Bai, is there something you want to tell me?"
A woman's sixth sense indeed existed. Qin Ruowei noticed Lin Bai's abnormality and took the initiative to ask.
Lin Bai hurriedly lowered his head to eat. "No, don't let your imagination run wild."
Qin Ruowei gave Lin Bai a deep look and did not press further.
...
Lin Bai only had one class that afternoon.
At 4:20 PM, after class, as he and his roommates were walking toward the dormitories, Wang Peichuan trotted up behind them.
"Brother Bai, hehehe."
Lin Bai frowned as he looked at him. From the bottom of his heart, he detested Wang Peichuan.
Unlike Li Yu—who at least had some brains—Wang Peichuan belonged to that type of person who had neither brains nor the sense to stay out of trouble, and he certainly had a knack for disgusting people.
"What are you doing? Get away, I'm warning you!" Chen Zhe pushed Wang Peichuan away with a warning tone.
"Brother Bai, I contacted Zhou Teng, and he replied to me."
Wang Peichuan shook his cell phone with a anxious expression.
Lin Bai stopped in his tracks, turned around, snatched the phone from Wang Peichuan's hand, and looked at Zhou Teng's reply.
"Who does he think he is? Tell him I don't have time."
After reading the message, Lin Bai was not surprised at all. He tossed the phone back to Wang Peichuan and turned to leave.
"You've brought this on yourself."
He had given Zhou Teng a chance. Since that was the case, there was no need for him to show any mercy.
...
Around five o'clock in the afternoon, Bai Kewei came to the campus once again.
This time, she had changed into casual attire: an oversized goose-yellow blouse on top, light blue jeans and white sneakers on the bottom, with her hair tied in a ponytail and a small black backpack slung over her shoulders.
The two of them got into the backseat of Bai Kewei's sedan once more. Bai Kewei took out the drafted authorization contract, but hesitated and didn't hand it over to Lin Bai.
Seeing this, Lin Bai snatched the contract from her hands. "What are you dawdling for?"
"Hey, Brother Bai, Brother Bai, this really isn't a child's game. I'm under so much pressure."
"What pressure could you possibly have? Even if the sky falls, I'm here to hold it up. What are you afraid of?"
Lin Bai was quite exasperated. As he spoke, he signed his name on the contract and handed the document back to Bai Kewei.
"There, from now on you are my representative in the company, fully authorized to handle all matters on my behalf. Come to me if you encounter anything you can't resolve."
There was another reason why Lin Bai did this: he didn't know how to manage a company, especially one as large as Zunhe Industries.
Comparatively speaking, although Bai Kewei had just graduated from university as well, at least her major was relevant. She was much more suited for this and understood it better.
With the signature affixed and the matter set in stone, Bai Kewei looked at the contract in a daze, keeping her head down without uttering a word.
Suddenly, Lin Bai noticed that Bai Kewei's emotions were off. He reached out and lifted her chin, only to discover that Bai Kewei was actually crying!
"Hey, what are you crying for? Unwilling? If you're unwilling, you should have said so earlier."
Bai Kewei turned her face away with some embarrassment, waving her hands continuously while wiping away tears with her other hand.
"No, that's not it, I'm just... just a bit moved. Thank you, Brother Bai, thank you for trusting me so much. I will definitely work hard and not let down your trust in me!"
Lin Bai was speechless. "I give up with you. By the way, how did that matter I asked you to investigate turn out?"
"I've checked into it, Brother Bai. There really is someone named Zhou Teng. Here is his information. Like me, he passed the final interview, received an offer, and starts work tomorrow."
Lin Bai flipped through Zhou Teng's file. "What department is he assigned to?"
"Management Trainee. Zhou Teng has experience as the president of the student union, so the company values him a lot. He's initially being groomed as a management trainee, with a starting monthly salary of 8K during probation, and 13K after becoming a regular employee."
Lin Bai nodded. "I know this Zhou Teng. His character is a bit flawed, so I think this matter needs to be carefully considered."
Bai Kewei was slightly stunned at first, but immediately comprehended.
"Understood, Brother Bai. I'll get right on handling this as soon as I return."
"Mhm, hard work. By the way, what is your intern salary?"
"7K, why?"
"That little? How can that do? Here's what you do: go back and draft a salary increase statement for yourself. Write down whatever amount you want, sign it yourself, and then take it straight to the finance department to verify it."
"Ah? Th-This..."
"Just like that. I have things to do, I'm leaving."
Without giving Bai Kewei a chance to react, Lin Bai pushed open the car door and stepped out, entering the campus under Bai Kewei's dazed gaze.
Bai Kewei felt as though all the good luck of her lifetime had been concentrated in these past two days.
Draft her own salary increase statement, write whatever amount she wanted, and then sign it herself?
Having studied so much, this was the first time Bai Kewei had ever heard of such a maneuver.
Of course, she wouldn't actually write down a monthly salary of a million casually; it still had to match her own capabilities.
Extremely happy, Bai Kewei drove away.
...
In the evening, after having dinner with Qin Ruowei, the two of them strolled together on the central district playground.
There were many students on the playground. Walking hand in hand, neither of them spoke.
Lin Bai's mind was entirely consumed by that godforsaken sub-quest. A day out of the one-week time limit had already passed, yet he still hadn't brought himself to say anything.
It wasn't because he lacked the courage, but because he didn't know how to start.
"Lin Bai, is there something you're keeping from me?"
As they walked, Qin Ruowei took the initiative to speak, asking quite abruptly.
"Huh? No, why would you ask that?" Lin Bai felt a bit guilty and feigned composure.
Qin Ruowei smiled faintly, and the two of them continued walking slowly.
"Lin Bai, if one day you don't like me anymore, or let's say, you fall for another girl, just tell me directly. I'm not that fragile, and I certainly won't pester you."
A woman's sixth sense was truly formidable. Lin Bai had thought his actions were flawless, but Qin Ruowei had still sensed something.
Hearing these words, boundless guilt washed over Lin Bai's heart. He pulled Qin Ruowei's arm and drew her into his embrace.
"Don't say things like that, Ruowei. Remember, you will always be the woman I love most, without exception!"
Qin Ruowei smiled and wrapped her arms around Lin Bai's neck.
"I know, and I can feel it too, but... I need a sense of security. I understand you far too little; I know nothing about everything concerning you."
"Lin Bai, I know you must have your reasons for hiding things from me, and I won't pry, but I don't want to be kept in the dark forever either. I am your girlfriend, not an outsider."
A single sentence from Qin Ruowei sent a sharp pang through Lin Bai's heart.
