Chapter 30: A True Scoundrel
"Sit here, I'll go get your medicine." Although the nurse's voice was gentle, her tone was cold and detached.
"Isn't there a doctor on duty?" Qin Feng asked quickly.
"No, I'm the only one on duty tonight. If you want to see a doctor, you'll have to wait until they start their shift tomorrow morning." The nurse said this while heading toward the pharmacy next door.
Even though the nurse assumed Qin Feng was nothing more than a local hoodlum, she still conscientiously applied the medication for his wounds.
After leaving the clinic, Qin Feng didn't head home. Instead, he found a rock by the side of a small path and sat down, smoking in silence.
About an hour later, he saw the headlights of a motorcycle approaching from a distance.
As the motorcycle drew near, Qin Feng stood up, ground his cigarette butt into the dirt, and stretched his ankles.
Just as the bike passed by, he delivered a powerful kick toward the rider.
The motorcycle was moving at speed, and the sudden impact caused it to lose control and flip into the ditch at the side of the road.
Qin Feng didn't stop there; he charged directly toward where the bike had crashed.
Yang Delin had been in a good mood tonight. He’d had a few drinks with some of his cronies, had them take care of a little task for him, and then spent the rest of the night playing mahjong, feeling quite satisfied with himself.
As he was riding home as usual, a sudden kick sent him and his bike flying into the ditch, leaving him dazed and disoriented.
Just as Yang Delin was about to unleash a string of profanities, a figure lunged at him. Without a word, the person began raining blows down on his face with fists like heavy mallets.
Yang Delin was instantly dazed, his consciousness blurring. He was completely defenseless; the punches came so fast he didn't even have a chance to call for help.
Qin Feng continued for a good while before finally standing up slowly.
Yang Delin's face was already covered in blood. He had been beaten by Qin Feng just this afternoon, leaving him bruised and swollen, and now he had been ambushed and pummeled all over again.
This time, the beating was far more brutal than the one from the afternoon; it was clear the assailant intended to beat him to death.
Qin Feng wiped the blood off his knuckles—blood that was, of course, Yang Delin's.
The exertion was intense, and even someone like Qin Feng, who exercised daily, had to pause to catch his breath and steady his racing heart.
He took a flashlight out of his pocket and shone it on Yang Delin’s face.
After being jumped earlier, Qin Feng had initially considered calling the police, but he had dismissed the idea by the time he reached the station.
In the pitch-black darkness of that earlier attack, he hadn't even seen his assailants, so even if he reported it, it was unlikely anything would come of it.
As for who had ordered the hit, Qin Feng could guess that with his eyes closed.
He knew where Yang Delin lived, and he knew that Yang Delin spent every night drinking and playing mahjong, rarely returning home before midnight.
He had waited on this small path not far from Yang Delin’s house, leading to the scene that had just unfolded.
"It's you... you little bastard..." Upon recognizing Qin Feng, Yang Delin was incensed and started cursing, but a sharp slap silenced him before he could finish.
"Go on, try cursing again," Qin Feng said, having delivered the blow, before casually lighting a cigarette.
Yang Delin immediately shut his mouth, not daring to spout more abuse. Having been beaten twice now, he understood all too well that he was no match for Qin Feng.
"If you've got the guts, kill me! If you don't dare, I'm going to the police... I'll have you thrown in jail!" Yang Delin spat through gritted teeth.
"Sure, go ahead. I was just worried about how to find the people who jumped me. If you want to call the police, that works out perfectly—I'll report my own attackers too," Qin Feng said calmly, sitting back on the rock.
Yang Delin immediately grasped the implication. Qin Feng was clearly here for revenge, and he knew exactly who had ordered the earlier attack.
"You're going to report it? Do you have any evidence to prove who hit you?" Yang Delin sneered.
"And can you prove that I hit you?" Qin Feng retorted.
Yang Delin was struck dumb. He realized the situation was identical to the one he had orchestrated against Qin Feng—there was absolutely no evidence.
"Fine, you win! But just you wait. Don't forget, this is Bishan; this is my turf. I can kill you whenever I want..." Yang Delin threatened.
He had endured more humiliation today than in his entire life, and he had no intention of letting this go.
"I said it in the office today: I'm waiting for you. Feel free to throw everything you've got at me."
"But let me remind you of something. I'm a graduate of a prestigious university. Before coming here, I worked for a major company in Shanghai, earning over ten thousand a month."
"If I lose this job, I can go back to Shanghai, or Shenzhen, or anywhere else, and I can easily make ten thousand a month again. But you? What about you?"
"If you lose this job, what will you eat? What will your wife and children eat? What about your pension? Your social security? Without this job, your whole family will starve. Do you really have the capacity to go up against me?"
"And let me add one more thing: my parents are long dead, I have no siblings, no wife, and no children. If I die, there won't even be anyone to burn paper money for me. But you? Do you really have the guts to risk your life against mine?"
"Yang Delin, your house is over there, right?" Qin Feng pointed toward the direction of Yang Delin's home, about a hundred meters away.
"What... what do you want?" Yang Delin felt a tremor of fear.
"What do I want? You're the one who said you wanted to risk your life with me, right? I'm just waiting for you to do it," Qin Feng said with a cold laugh.
"Yang Delin, you'd best not test my patience again. If you want to compete at being a scoundrel, I'll show you what a real scoundrel looks like."
"I have no one to care for but myself. You? Do you dare? If you're not afraid of death, keep coming after me. I'll be here waiting for you every single day," Qin Feng said, exhaling a cloud of smoke.
