Chapter 18: The Unruly Scoundrel
The moment Qin Feng slipped his hand inside the woman’s underwear, she suddenly snapped awake. She pushed him off her, panting heavily, and sat up on the bed.
“Looks honest on the surface, but turns out you’re quite the naughty scoundrel…” The woman’s cheeks were flushed with a rosy glow as she fastened her bra, glaring at Qin Feng who was still fast asleep on the bed.
Though she scolded him, her face was filled with a smile, devoid of any real reproach.
She tidied her disheveled hair, walked over, and gently covered Qin Feng with the blanket again. After confirming he was alright, she quietly closed the door and left his dormitory.
The next morning, Qin Feng woke up much later than usual. He still had a pounding headache from the night’s heavy drinking. After washing his face, he felt somewhat better.
Standing on the balcony, Qin Feng lit a cigarette and tried to recall what had happened after he got drunk the night before. He only remembered the woman waiting downstairs and helping him back; everything else was a blank.
Just as he was about to head downstairs, he received a call from the woman.
“Are you up?” she asked.
“I’m up, getting ready for work.”
“Don’t rush. I made some porridge. Come over and eat something; you need to nourish your stomach after drinking.”
Qin Feng didn’t refuse and went straight to her place.
“Does your head still hurt?” she asked gently as Qin Feng sipped the porridge.
“A bit, but I feel much better after eating your porridge.”
“Oh? Why are you suddenly so sweet-talking so early in the morning? That’s much sweeter than last night,” she teased with a smile.
“Ah… I didn’t say anything crazy last night, did I?” Qin Feng caught the hidden meaning in her tone and was startled, quickly asking.
“You didn’t just say crazy things; you did things worse than a beast,” she chuckled as she drank her porridge.
Qin Feng’s eyes widened. He jumped up so quickly his face changed color. “Sis…I…I really was drunk…I…”
“Look at you, all flustered. Scared? If you’re scared, then don’t drink so much next time.”
Seeing her attitude, Qin Feng’s unease deepened. He sat back down weakly and asked, “Sis, what exactly did I do last night?”
“Don’t you remember what you did?” she said casually.
“I…” Qin Feng was nearly terrified out of his wits.
“Look at you, scared stiff. Afraid I’ll report you for assault?”
“No… Sis…I…”
“I’m teasing you. Nothing happened last night. You just held my hand and told me you liked me,” she said leisurely.
“I was really drunk; I don’t remember anything. Please don’t take my nonsense seriously.”
“So you don’t like me? Looks like I was imagining things. I actually believed you last night.”
“That’s not what I meant…”
“Then do you like me or not?” she asked, lifting her head to Qin Feng, her face full of amusement.
“…”
“See, you’re so uncooperative. Alright, just teasing you. You were drunk as a pig and passed out as soon as you hit the bed. You didn’t say a word.”
Hearing this, Qin Feng’s heart finally settled.
“Sis, actually, I came to say goodbye.”
“When do you plan to leave?” she asked without surprise.
“Right now. I don’t want to stay here a second longer.”
“Even if you’re leaving, you have to go to the office and handle the paperwork first, or it will affect your future job prospects,” she reminded him.
Qin Feng thought it over and nodded.
“After that wild drunken night, do you feel any better?”
“Not really. Just like being bitten by a pack of mad dogs.”
“You have to trust the organization. They’ll give you a chance and justice,” she emphasized the words “chance” and “justice,” as if reminding him of something.
“Justice…” Qin Feng found the word bitterly ironic and laughed it off, thinking she was joking, so he didn’t take it to heart.
Dragging his suitcase and carrying his bag, Qin Feng went to the Party and Government Office to handle the formalities.
He found Xiao Liu at the Party and Government Office: “Hello, I’m here to handle the procedures.”
“Secretary Hu just called me. She asked me not to process your paperwork yet. She wants you to return to the Civil Affairs Office and wait for further notice.”
“Secretary Hu?” Qin Feng was stunned again upon hearing that name. This was the second time he’d heard it.
“I was already fired, wasn’t I?” Qin Feng asked in confusion.
“Secretary Hu said your dismissal didn’t follow proper organizational procedures and told you to wait at the Civil Affairs Office for instructions.”
“But the dismissal notice has already been issued.”
“I’m not sure about that. You can ask Secretary Hu yourself.”
Full of questions, Qin Feng pulled his suitcase and bag and returned to the Civil Affairs Office.
Just as Qin Feng sat down at his desk, Xiao Bo passed by the office entrance and stopped when he saw him.
“What are you still doing here? Can’t read the documents or understand what’s being said? You’re already fired. Get out of here!” Xiao Bo barked sternly before leaving.
Not long after Xiao Bo left, Yang Delin came in, smoking a cigarette. Seeing Qin Feng standing by the desk with wide eyes, he snapped.
“What are you still doing here? Refusing to leave?”
Qin Feng remained seated at his desk, ignoring Yang Delin.
“Are you deaf or what? Can’t understand what I’m saying? Get the hell out of here! Don’t ever step foot in the Civil Affairs Office again, got it?” Yang Delin threatened, pointing at Qin Feng’s nose.
Qin Feng still said nothing.
Seeing Qin Feng’s indifference, Yang Delin lost his temper and threw Qin Feng’s bag out the door.
“Get out of here, did you hear me?” Yang Delin was arrogant beyond measure.
Qin Feng looked at Yang Delin coldly and said, “Pick up my things.”
“Oh? You little bastard dare talk back to me like that? So what if I threw your stuff?” Yang Delin kicked Qin Feng’s suitcase over again and pointed at him. “What are you gonna do about it?”
Qin Feng sneered. Since arriving in Bishan, he had endured Yang Delin’s provocations with a calm attitude, but now that he had been fired, what was there left to worry about?
He stood up, took off his jacket, threw it onto the desk, and strode toward Yang Delin, his eyes burning with murderous intent.
