Volume 1, Chapter 12: The Chaos Sea is in an Uproar
Soon, his eyes lit up as he spotted an "earthworm"—a dark golden creature, wriggling with boundless vitality.
Satisfied, he attached the "earthworm" (a hatchling of a Chaos Dragon Beast) onto his hook (a piece of wire he had bent on a whim) and walked to the edge of the pond.
He cast his fishing rod, sending the bait into the center of the pond.
The bait, carrying the thread of the Law of Causality, sank silently into the deep waters that connected to the Sea of Chaos.
Gu Changsheng brought over a lounge chair, adjusted himself into a comfortable position, put on his straw hat, and began his first fishing trip in this other world.
All he wanted was peace and quiet; he hoped, ideally, that no fish would bite all afternoon.
However, he did not know that the moment the Chaos Dragon Beast hatchling, imbued with the aura of a World Tree branch and the vibrations of the Law of Causality, sank into the Sea of Chaos, the entire dead and silent sea began to boil.
The Sea of Chaos.
Here, there is no time, no space, no directions. There is only eternal, deathly silence and the churning of gray currents.
It is the graveyard of ten thousand worlds, the terminal point of all Dao laws. For countless eons, an unknown number of defeated taboo entities, fallen ancient gods and demons, and banished, terrifying creatures have sunk here, turning into cold wrecks and falling into endless slumber.
Yet, on this day, that ancient, unchanging silence was shattered.
The instant that "earthworm," carrying the pulse of causality and tainted with the fresh scent of the World Tree, sank into the sea, an invisible ripple spread to every corner of the Sea of Chaos at a speed surpassing all concepts.
It was not a sound, nor a light.
It was an irresistible, primal craving originating from the deepest depths of life itself.
It was the fragrance of creation.
It was the sweetness of order.
For these entities sinking in the ultimate void and chaos, this aura was more fatal than the most exquisite delicacy or the most alluring Great Dao in existence.
Deep in the silent seabed, the fossilized eyelids of an ancient, gargantuan beast—a creature the size of a vast world—struggled to creak open a sliver.
Elsewhere, a black shadow composed of pure resentment and the laws of destruction ceased its billion-year-long unconscious drifting and snapped toward the source of the ripple.
Deeper still, a mountain formed from the piled remains of countless gods and demons shook violently, as pale, skeletal hands reached out from the mass, clawing frantically at the void.
...
Awakening.
One after another.
Names that existed only in the oldest legends, terrors that made even the Dao Ancestors shudder at the mention, were now, like sharks smelling blood, rousing from their respective graves. Instinctively and frantically, they rushed toward the source of the temptation.
The entire Sea of Chaos was in an uproar.
Meanwhile, across the Nine Heavens and Ten Earths, in every major Forbidden Life Zone...
These places, which usually exerted pressure over eons and were so formidable that even immortal dynasties dared not provoke them, were now echoing with terrified screams.
"No! Impossible! The Ancient Observation Mirror has shattered!" A master of a forbidden zone, shrouded in divine light, watched as his Dao artifact turned to dust, his voice trembling.
"The Heaven-Heart Compass needle has exploded! All calibrations pointing to the Sea of Chaos have melted!"
"What happened? What on earth has happened?! Why have all those sleeping old monsters in the Sea of Chaos come back to life?"
"Who! Who poked the hornet's nest!"
Countless ancient beings hiding from the world peered through their secret treasures and caught a glimpse of the terrifying scene of demons dancing in the Sea of Chaos.
They saw Great Old Ones capable of corrupting the heavens roaring. They saw God-Eaters that should have been utterly extinguished shrieking. They saw countless unspeakable horrors, known only from taboo texts, devouring and colliding with one another, all to get just a little bit closer to the center of the temptation.
This spectacle caused these masters of forbidden zones, who considered themselves at the pinnacle of the world, to have their Dao hearts near collapse.
"Seal! Quickly! Seal the forbidden zones immediately!"
"Pass down my decree: from this day forth, the forbidden zones are sealed for a billion years! No one is allowed to leave!"
"The sky is falling... the sky is truly falling..."
Fear spread like a plague. On this day, the Forbidden Life Zones that once looked down upon all living things scrambled to activate their strongest defensive formations, isolating themselves completely from the outside world, terrified of being affected by even a fraction of that incomprehensible catastrophe.
Yet the culprit behind all of this, Gu Changsheng, was lying leisurely on his chair, half-closing his eyes and feeling the breeze on his face.
Comfortable.
Just a bit bored.
He even started to feel that fishing wasn't as interesting as he had imagined.
Just as he was drifting into a doze, the tip of his fishing rod was pulled downward by a slight force.
Gu Changsheng's eyelids twitched.
"Oh? A bite?"
He felt more alert; at least he wasn't just waiting for nothing.
He gripped the bamboo pole and applied a little force, wanting to gauge the size of the fish.
"Hmm?"
The feedback suggested it had no weight at all.
Probably just a small fish.
Gu Changsheng curled his lip in disappointment. Small fish were boring; there was no sense of achievement in reeling them in.
Under the corridor not far away, Uncle Fu stood with his hands behind his back.
His murky old eyes clearly reflected the terrifying sight of ten thousand demons fighting for food in the Sea of Chaos. He also saw that thread of the Law of Causality, under the tugging of countless terrifying entities, precisely latch onto a colossal, ancient wreck that had been sleeping at the very bottom.
A knowing smile curled the corners of Uncle Fu's mouth.
The young master was truly still the same young master. How could an ordinary fish ever catch his eye? Was he trying to reel in a massive one to serve as a "treasure to guard the pond"?
Just then, Gu Changsheng felt the bamboo pole in his hand sink violently.
A massive force surged from beneath the water, nearly pulling him right off his lounge chair.
"Whoa?"
Gu Changsheng was interested now.
"That's quite a kick."
He adjusted his posture, gripped the rod with both hands, and prepared to have a proper tussle with the big guy under the water.
He failed to notice that as he applied force, the seemingly ordinary green bamboo pole began to glow with an imperceptible radiance of the World Tree. The flexible line pulled taut into a straight, rigid string imbued with the Supreme Law of Causality.
The entire Sea of Chaos began to churn violently due to the pull of this force.
"Hey?"
Gu Changsheng raised an eyebrow. The resistance from his hand pulled him completely out of his drowsy state.
He gripped the green bamboo pole with both hands, engaged his waist, and leaned back, locking horns with whatever was under the water.
The bamboo pole bent into a breathtaking arc, yet the tender leaves on the rod didn't even tremble; instead, they exuded an even more lush, verdant luster.
"Interesting."
Gu Changsheng grinned; he had finally found some fun.
In two lifetimes, he had never caught such a vigorous fish. Today, he had to see exactly what kind of monster was hiding at the bottom of this pond.
He began to apply force, reeling and releasing, his movements looking clumsy and casual, exactly like an old man from the countryside fishing.
But in a place he could not see, a terrifying storm beyond words was unfolding.
In the Sea of Chaos, the thread of the Law of Causality connected to the "bait" was now pulled taut, erupting with a supreme "Reason."
It ignored all the chaotic laws within the Sea of Chaos and locked directly onto an unimaginably massive ancient wreck, forcibly dragging it upward from the silt where it had slumbered for countless eons.
The awakening of this wreck stirred the entire Sea of Chaos. Wherever it passed, space-time was torn asunder, and dimensions wailed.
Those taboo entities that had just been awakened and were in a state of fury instantly transitioned from rage to absolute terror upon feeling the power that dragged the wreck.
It was not the pressure of raw power, but an absolute crushing sensation from the very peak of the hierarchy of life.
