Chapter 21: Entering the Examination Hall with Injuries

Seeing Chen Fan staggering, they had assumed the kid was about to collapse.
But no one expected him to force himself to stay on his feet.
He completely ignored the men around him and suddenly lunged at the redhead in front of him.
Thud, thud...
The beer bottle in his hand drove into the man’s thigh.
“Ah...!”
The poor redhead had only just managed to stand when Chen Fan stabbed him twice more. He let out a howl like a slaughtered pig.
Chen Fan grabbed him by the red hair and pressed the jagged bottle against his throat.
“Who dares come any closer?”
“I’m underage. Worst comes to worst, I’ll cripple one of you first!”
The moment those words left his mouth, the nearby thugs froze in fright.
The redhead was clearly terrified as well. He had never imagined that a high school student could be so vicious.
“Bro... brother, this is all a misunderstanding...”
“Cut the crap!”
Chen Fan raised his hand and punched him squarely in the face, smashing his nose and sending blood spraying all over him.
“Talk! Who told you to do this?”
The redhead was still howling in pain when Chen Fan pressed the broken bottle against his throat again, drawing blood.
“Talk!”
“Don’t kill me, don’t kill me... It was Huang Hu!”
“Huang Hu paid me a thousand yuan to cripple one of your hands on the day of the college entrance examination.”
So it really was him!
Chen Fan narrowed his eyes slightly.
He dragged the redhead backward a few steps, then suddenly kicked him in the backside and turned to run toward the mouth of the alley.
“Damn it! Catch him!”
The redhead sprawled on the ground, shouting at the top of his lungs.
“Catch that bastard! I’m going to kill him!”
Chen Fan was almost out of the alley when the thugs behind him caught up.
Just as he was preparing to fight for his life again, a figure suddenly rushed out from the alley entrance.
Guo Shuai lifted a trash can and hurled it straight at the group.
“Get on!”
Without the slightest hesitation, Chen Fan shot out of the alley and leaped onto the back of Guo Shuai’s bicycle.
Guo Shuai pushed off hard with both feet, and the bicycle sped away.
The gang of young thugs chased them for a while, throwing their metal pipes and clubs after them. They clanged and crashed against the road, but in the end, all they could do was watch helplessly as the two boys disappeared into the distance.
They pedaled desperately toward the school.
Only when they reached the area near the school gates did Guo Shuai plant both feet on the ground and bring the bicycle to an abrupt stop.
He quickly turned to look at Chen Fan.
“Are you all right?”
“You’re bleeding.”
Chen Fan was in poor shape. He had been struck several times, and a large lump had swollen on his head.
Most alarming of all was his left palm, which had been sliced open by the broken bottle. Blood continued to pour from the deep wound.
The moment Guo Shuai saw it, he immediately prepared to turn around.
“I’m taking you to the hospital.”

Chen Fan grabbed him by the arm.
“No. The exam is about to begin.”
“Damn it, how are you supposed to take the exam like this? Do you have a death wish?”
Chen Fan hurriedly held him back.
“Guo Shuai, listen to me. Just listen...”
“What have we worked for these past three years, if not for today? I can’t give up now...”
“My injuries only look frightening. They aren’t actually that serious. I just need to stop the bleeding.”
“You...”
“Listen to me!”
Chen Fan tightened his grip slightly around the other boy’s hand.
Guo Shuai stared deeply at him, then suddenly gritted his teeth.
“There should be an ambulance parked outside the school gates. I’ll take you there and have them bandage you up first.”
“They won’t let you into the examination hall looking like this.”
This time, Chen Fan did not refuse.
“All right.”
The two of them hurried toward the ambulance parked outside the school gates.
The nurse on duty was visibly startled when she saw Chen Fan.
“What happened? Were you in a fight?”
Chen Fan casually made up an excuse.
“I fell off my bicycle and happened to land on some broken glass.”
The young nurse was about to say something, but the female doctor beside her called out,
“Don’t ask questions yet. Treat him first.”
Once they were inside the ambulance, the doctor took one look at the wound on Chen Fan’s hand and immediately frowned.
“The wound is too deep. It needs to be stitched at once. You should go to the hospital.”
“No!”
Chen Fan hurriedly said, “Doctor, please just treat it for now. That’s all I need.”
“I still have to take my exam.”
“You still want to take the exam? How can you possibly do that in your condition? Do you have a death wish?”
Chen Fan pleaded, “Doctor, this examination is truly important to me. My family is poor, and we can’t afford to support me through another year of preparation.”
“Please.”
The female doctor hesitated when she heard this, but finally said, “Even if I treat it here, the wound still has to be stitched. Otherwise, you’ll bleed continuously.”
“That’s fine.” Chen Fan nodded.
“You’ll need an anesthetic before I stitch it... It may affect your exam afterward.”
Chen Fan immediately shook his head.
“I don’t need anesthesia. Just stitch it directly.”
“Are you trying to kill yourself?”
The beautiful doctor frowned, apparently annoyed.
But Chen Fan remained resolute.
“This exam really is important to me. Please.”
Guo Shuai joined in from the side.
“Doctor, please help him. This exam truly means everything to him.”
The female doctor looked deeply at Chen Fan. After pondering for several seconds, she rose expressionlessly and walked to the side.
“If I don’t give you an anesthetic, it will hurt badly. Can you endure it?”
Chen Fan nodded.
“No problem.”
Seeing how stubborn he was, the doctor could only sigh helplessly.

She had the nurse wrap a bandage around Chen Fan’s forehead while she personally disinfected the wound on his hand with povidone-iodine.
Then she picked up a needle and thread.
“If you can’t bear it, tell me immediately.”
Chen Fan nodded.
The doctor said nothing more. She drove the needle straight into the flesh of his palm.
Chen Fan furrowed his brow, the corner of his mouth twitching slightly from the pain.
But he did not make a sound.
The doctor glanced up at him. No longer hesitating, she began stitching the wound with swift, practiced movements.
Five minutes later, the wound had been closed.
Chen Fan’s head was already drenched in sweat.
The beautiful doctor looked at him with a trace of admiration.
“Although the wound has been stitched, there’s still a risk of infection. You must go to the hospital for thorough disinfection after the exam.”
“Understood!”
“How much do I owe you?”
The doctor lifted a strand of hair from her temple and tucked it behind her ear.
“This is a charity ambulance for the college entrance examination. There’s no charge.”
Chen Fan stood and quickly pulled on his school uniform jacket.
He exchanged a glance with Guo Shuai, and the two of them jumped out of the ambulance one after the other.
Before leaving, Chen Fan turned back toward the doctor.
“Thank you.”
Then he hurried toward the school gates.
“What a lunatic!” the young nurse muttered.
Lin Yuwei, however, watched Chen Fan’s retreating figure and murmured,
“To possess such extraordinary endurance and conviction at his age... I believe he will succeed at anything he sets out to do in the future.”
Examination Room 13.
Huang Hu sat in his seat and glanced at the empty desk behind him.
Then he looked up at the clock on the wall.
One minute remained before the exam began.
It seemed Chen Fan was not going to make it.
Serves him right!
Huang Hu cursed inwardly, his spirits soaring.
How dare he try to steal my woman?
He should have taken a good look at himself first.
Chen Fan, this is what happens when you stand against me.
His legs swung excitedly beneath the desk, and he could not help quietly humming a tune.
The two invigilators at the front of the classroom had also noticed the vacant seat.
They looked up at the time.
The final bell for entering the examination room rang.
“All right, everyone...”
The invigilator had only just begun speaking when a sudden gust swept through the classroom doorway.
A figure burst into the room just as the bell rang.
“Report.”
