Chapter 30: An Exceptional Talent for Making Money

He really doesn’t treat the village chief like an official, Xu Wu thought resentfully. But then again, Chen Xiao had helped her secure a three-million-yuan deal, so she could only put up with him.
After all, she still hoped he might help her again in the future.
In the end, Chen Xiao tried on three outfits and found them quite satisfactory, so he had the sales assistant pack up every size that matched Zhao Xiangjun’s measurements.
“Well, well, I never would have guessed it. Did you strike it rich?”
Seeing him pay more than seventeen thousand yuan in one go, Xu Wu teased him from the side.
“You can spend twenty-five thousand treating unrelated people to dinner. What’s wrong with spending a little on your own people?”
Xu Wu was secretly annoyed, but she had to admit that he had a point. At the same time, she wondered inwardly: What kind of salesperson spends money like this? Could he be some rich heir slumming it for the experience?
“Anything else, Boss Chen? If not, this humble servant shall take her leave. I still have to go to Zhongjian Equipment this afternoon to confirm our cooperation.”
“Go on, then. And remember to settle my bonus later!”
Xu Wu rolled her eyes, thinking that he certainly didn’t look like someone short of money.
After Xu Wu left, Chen Xiao wandered around the mall by himself. When he spotted a HarmonyOS showroom, he went in on a whim to take a look at the recently popular AITO M9 and Luxeed R7. He sat inside them and experienced the HarmonyOS cockpit, the vehicle interaction system, and the zero-gravity seats.
When he came out, he was filled with grievances. Forget the M9—even the Luxeed R7 felt far more refined, intelligent, and comfortable than his own CLS.
What had the system been thinking when it gave him a gasoline-powered car?
He was rather tempted. Should he buy one?
Forget it. He didn’t even have enough parking spaces right now. Once he moved into a larger house with several more parking spots, he could buy a new-energy vehicle for fun.
As he hesitated his way out of the HarmonyOS showroom, a message arrived on WeChat. They had agreed to pick pomegranates at a farm the next day, and the address had been sent over. They were not to miss each other.
Meng Jianshu had specifically emphasized that everyone must bring a female companion. He could understand Liu Bo not having one, so he would have Lili bring along a friend. Chen Xiao and Tao Yong, however, would have to fend for themselves.
Tao Yong readily agreed, and Chen Xiao could only reply with an “OK” emoji.
Returning home that evening was the moment Chen Xiao looked forward to most each day. There was a warm, homely feeling here.
Carrying several large bags, he entered Zhao Xiangjun’s apartment. She had just finished preparing the ingredients and was waiting for him to come back before cooking. Seeing him laden with packages, she asked, “What’s all that?”
“Clothes I bought for you!”
“Why did you buy me clothes? I’m not short of clothes. I have plenty!”
He couldn’t very well tell her that all her clothes were cheap online purchases and beneath her. So he merely said, “I was browsing the mall today and thought these would suit you, so I bought them.”
“Then bring the whole mall home. Everything in there suits me!”
“I can’t carry the whole thing!”
“You’ve earned a little money and already forgotten who you are. How long do you think this kind of spending will last?”
He said nothing, simply dropping into a chair like some pampered lord.
“It’s only a few pieces of clothing. Cuihua, bring out the dishes!”
Zhao Xiangjun stared at him. Cuihua? How could he even think of that? After waiting a moment and seeing that he had no intention of moving, she speechlessly went to cook, deciding to ignore him altogether.
“You make such an elaborate spread every day!” he remarked as dish after dish was brought to the table.
“If you keep spending money like this every day, we’ll soon be unable to afford even a pot of rice!”
“You’re underestimating me. Don’t worry—the more you eat, the richer I become!” It sounded completely illogical, yet it happened to be the truth.
Zhao Xiangjun naturally couldn’t understand. She snorted and said, “Eat your dinner and shut your mouth!”
Chen Xiao pointed at the shrimp.
Looking helpless, she peeled them for him and muttered, “Chen Xiao, you’re treating me like a maid now. My life is so miserable!”
“No, it’s mainly because you’re so good at peeling shrimp. I only know how to eat them. We’re the perfect combination—each professional handling his own job!”
She looked at him with undisguised disdain. “Did you leave your face behind when you came over?”
“Haha!”
He then told her about their outing to the farm the next day. As they chatted about several of their classmates, Tao Yong came up, and Chen Xiao briefly recounted what had happened that night.
Zhao Xiangjun exclaimed, “People are like dogs.”
Chen Xiao didn’t understand what she meant, so she explained, “Different breeds.”
All right, then. Why make it so roundabout? She could have simply said that people were different from one another.
Since the outing had been decided the previous night, Zhao Xiangjun had already asked for leave. The next day’s schedule was entirely up to Chen Xiao.
After dinner, he finished the fruit Zhao Xiangjun had cut for him and was preparing to leave and get some rest when she called him back.
“Here. This is for you. Try it on.”
“What is it?”
He took it and saw that it was an Omega wristwatch. Chen Xiao was puzzled.
“Why did you buy me a watch? Aren’t we supposed to be poor now?”
She was getting back at him for buying her clothes and criticizing his spending just moments earlier.
“You really are biting the hand of kindness. I gave you a gift, and you don’t even appreciate it!”
“Oh? By that logic, you just bit Lu Dongbin too!”
As he spoke, he opened the package, took out the watch, and put it on. Then he raised his arm and asked, “Does it look good?”

She nodded. “Yes. You finally look like a proper human being!”
Chen Xiao pretended to be angry. “What do you mean? Are you saying I wasn’t human before?”
“Pay attention to what I said. I said you look like a human now. Looking like one still doesn’t mean you are one!”
Chen Xiao pretended to hit her. She laughed and dodged, but he caught her by the arm and pulled her into his embrace. The two of them fell onto the sofa.
She tried to struggle, but his arm held her fast.
“Let go of me!”
“No!”
Chen Xiao buried his head in her long, lustrous hair and took a deep breath. It smelled wonderful.
A few seconds later, she said, “All right, hurry up and let go!”
Sensing that she was uncomfortable, he released her. This was still progress—she was shy, but not angry.
“Go home and get some sleep. We have to leave early tomorrow. That farm of yours is a long way from here. I checked, and we’ll have to change trains several times!”
“Just sleep in peace. We only need to leave at nine tomorrow morning. There’s no need to go too early!”
They had arranged to meet at ten in the morning, stroll around the farm, and then pick pomegranates before having a meal at the farm restaurant.
After returning to his own apartment, Chen Xiao opened the system notifications. There was a message:
“Ding! Zhao Xiangjun provided the host with dinner. Cost: fifty yuan. Reward: a ninety-six-thousand-yuan Special Fortune Fund for the Opposite Sex in Zhao Xiangjun’s name!”
“Ding! Detected that Zhao Xiangjun independently spent fifty-one thousand eight hundred yuan on the host. Reward: a ninety-nine-point-four-five-six-million-yuan Special Fortune Fund for the Opposite Sex in Zhao Xiangjun’s name. Fund balance after reward: ten-point-nine-three-five-two million yuan.”
Good grief. Did Zhao Xiangjun herself even realize how incredibly profitable she was? Chen Xiao had only a little over three million yuan in capital, yet she had already become a multimillionaire.
What should he do with so much money? Buy her a house? Buy her a car? Or invest it?
Chen Xiao felt that he needed to make a proper plan. At her current earning rate, even his own spending speed was starting to fall behind.
“Chen Xiao, the contract for the Zhongjian Equipment order has been signed. I’ll transfer the money tomorrow. Once the payment arrives, I’ll apply to the company to have your three-percent commission paid out. Thank you for your support. I look forward to working with you!”
Just as he got into bed, he received a message from Xu Wu. It seemed that his first sales commission would not be coming from Dr. Feng’s Robotics after all.
