Chapter 38: Take One Million, and Don’t Make a Fool of Yourself
He looked down at his baggy shorts and flip-flops, thinking they might be a bit... unkempt.
"Hmm, that’s possible," Chen Yu nodded thoughtfully. "Next time I go out, I should put on some decent clothes."
The live stream’s chat section had completely lost its mind.
[One million!!! Holy crap, what am I seeing? One million!!!]
[So, not only was God Yu’s wife not angry, she just transferred him a million?!!]
["Don't go out and embarrass yourself again"... the way she said that, it’s so domineering yet doting! Doesn't that just mean "Honey, don't work so hard, I'll support you"?!!]
[Damn, what kind of god-tier wife is this! I’m jealous, I’m seriously jealous! One second they were calling Chen Yu selfish, and the next, his wife stuffed a mouthful of dog food down our throats!]
[So, was Chen Yu's talk about the secret stash just a playful joke between husband and wife? His wife didn't care at all?]
[This plot twist... my brain can't keep up. So is Chen Yu a peerless husband, or a selfish social climber?]
[Is there a possibility that his wife is a super-wealthy woman? Thirty thousand is nothing to her, so she doesn't care. But Chen Yu is definitely still selfish!]
[Stop arguing! I just want to know who Chen Yu’s wife is right now?! This is too insane!]
The tone of the chat shifted in a massive, earth-shattering reversal once again.
The audience's curiosity was thoroughly ignited. They speculated wildly about the identity of Chen Yu’s wife, guessing everyone from A-list actresses to formidable businesswomen.
As for the culprit, Chen Yu, after struggling for a long time over "what counts as embarrassing," he finally gave up on thinking.
Forget it, don't try to guess a woman's mind.
At least the money was in his hands.
One million and three thousand!
Now, never mind fishing rods and game consoles; he had enough to buy a small fishing boat!
Chen Yu’s mood instantly shifted from cloudy to sunny, and he lay back on the sofa in bliss.
...
Happy times are always fleeting.
Before Chen Yu could fully recover from the shock of the million-dollar windfall, it was time to take Niannian to school.
"Niannian, get up! If you don't get up now, you're going to be late for school!"
Chen Yu walked into the bedroom and gently patted the small, curled-up figure on the bed.
Niannian rubbed her sleepy eyes, let out a soft whine, and reluctantly sat up, her hair a messy little bird's nest.
Chen Yu chuckled, reached out to smooth her hair, and skillfully found the clothes she was meant to wear today.
It was a beautiful little pink dress, paired with white ankle socks and a pair of shiny leather shoes.
"Wow, our Niannian is going to look just like a little princess in this."
Chen Yu praised her as he helped her get dressed.
Niannian was a bit shy from the compliment, her little face flushing slightly as she obediently let Chen Yu fuss over her.
Once dressed and freshened up, Chen Yu took her little hand and headed to the dining room.
Breakfast, which he had prepared early that morning, was already laid out on the table.
The millet porridge was cooked until soft and sweet, sprinkled with a touch of bright green scallions. Beside it, on a small plate, were several adorable custard buns shaped like little pigs and rabbits, looking delightfully charming.
"Eat up, and then Dad will take you to school."
"Mm!"
Niannian nodded vigorously, picked up a pig-shaped bun, and took small bites, her eyes squinting into crescent moons of happiness.
The viewers in the live stream, watching this warm and harmonious scene, found their feelings becoming complicated once again.
[Sigh, if you call him a bad person, he’s truly good to Niannian—unimpeachably good.]
[This breakfast is so thoughtful! Those custard buns, you can tell they were homemade!]
[Exactly. Someone like Zhao Kai wouldn't even know how to cook. Compared to that, Chen Yu doesn't seem so bad.]
[Don't be fooled! Being good to your daughter is what you're supposed to do! But the fact that he wanted to hide secret money and is selfish toward his wife remains true!]
[Exactly! One thing at a time! He might be a good father, but he isn't necessarily a good husband!]
[Can you guys stop arguing? Can't we just watch the stream? I just want to see him take the kid to school.]
After breakfast, Chen Yu took Niannian’s small hand and stepped out.
The First Primary School that Jiang Zhiyun had arranged for Niannian was the city's top-tier private elementary school.
Chen Yu rode his beat-up electric scooter—the one that rattled everywhere except for the bell—carrying Niannian, who looked like a little princess, as they chugged toward the school.
The sight was jarring, no matter how you looked at it.
Along the way, they were constantly passed by luxury cars, and through the windows, you could see other children dressed in exquisite clothes.
Those parents and children all looked at this strangely matched father and daughter with odd expressions.
Chen Yu, however, didn't care; his skin was as thick as a city wall.
Niannian, conversely, grabbed the corner of Chen Yu’s shirt in discomfort, burying her little face against his back.
Finally, they arrived at the First Primary School.
Looking at the magnificent gates that resembled a European castle, and the rows of luxury cars—none worth less than a million—parked at the entrance, Chen Yu couldn't help but twitch his mouth.
"Is this a primary school? It's more majestic than a palace."
He muttered to himself.
After dropping Niannian off and watching her walk through those grand gates with her little backpack, looking back every few steps, Chen Yu felt a sudden, empty hollow in his chest.
He sighed, climbed onto his little electric scooter, and slowly headed home.
The house was empty, leaving him all alone.
What should he do?
Chen Yu thought for a moment and decisively turned on his computer.
"League! Launch!"
Men are boys until they die.
With money in his pocket and time on his hands, if he didn't play games, how would he be any different from a salted fish?
He put on his headphones and dove headlong into the slaughter of Summoner's Canyon, casting his wife, his child, and the embarrassment of his morning far into the back of his mind.
Time flew by to the sound of his keyboard and mouse.
One game, two games, three games...
Chen Yu was killing with such intensity he completely lost track of time.
It wasn't until the harsh ringing of his phone pulled him out of the game world that he stopped.
He irritably pulled off his headphones and answered the call without even looking at the screen.
"Hello? Who is this? If you have something to say, make it quick, I’m in a team fight!"
There was a silence for two seconds on the other end, followed by a somewhat stern female voice.
"Hello, may I ask if this is Mr. Chen Yu, the father of student Chen Nian?"
Chen Yu paused, only now noticing that it was an unfamiliar number.
"Uh? Yes, that's me. Who are you..."
"I am Niannian’s teacher, Ms. Wang, from the First Primary School."
The woman’s voice sounded somewhat urgent. "Mr. Chen, it’s like this: Niannian got into a fight with a classmate at school. Could you please come over right now?"
"What?!"
Chen Yu’s voice shot up an octave.
A fight?
Niannian?
The mouse in his hand clattered onto the desk.
"Teacher, are you sure you haven't made a mistake?"
Chen Yu’s brow furrowed tightly, his tone filled with disbelief. "My Niannian doesn't even speak loudly on a normal day. She’s such a well-behaved child, how could she possibly get into a fight with someone?"
