Chapter 6: A Formidable Foe Approaches!
"Feng'er, what happened?" Mu Ruxue looked at Qin Feng in confusion.
"Uh..."
Qin Feng let out a deep cry.
Not being able to speak was terribly inconvenient; even the most basic communication was impossible.
He could write, but in a situation like this, writing was useless.
Time was tight, and there was no spare moment for that.
If only he could speak again, everything would be perfect.
"Have the people from the Bright Sun Sect found us?" Mu Ruxue suddenly asked in a low voice.
"Ah!"
Qin Feng nodded.
He had already caught the scent of five Dao sect disciples.
The aura on those five was exactly the same as that of the senior brother and junior sister.
In other words, they were also from the Bright Sun Sect.
One of them was very strong.
The remaining four were not weak either, about as strong as the senior brother.
His aunt had suffered internal injuries, and it was doubtful she could defeat five opponents.
"I didn't expect them to come so quickly. Feng'er, fleeing like this won't help.
They can sense the corpse aura on you. You go first; I'll hold them off."
Mu Ruxue stopped, her expression grave, her voice solemn. "Don't run deeper into the mountains. Go straight to the city.
There are so many people there, and the scents are mixed; it can cover your corpse aura.
Now that you have some intelligence, as long as you're careful and find a hidden place to hide, you should be fine."
Qin Feng was deeply moved.
His aunt was far too good to him.
"Feng'er, don't hesitate. Go, now!"
Mu Ruxue's beautiful face was stern, her tone urgent.
Qin Feng did not move. Instead, he stood firmly in front of Mu Ruxue.
He knew very well that he should indeed leave.
Only then would he have a chance to survive.
But if he abandoned his aunt for the sake of survival, then even if he lived on, he would be trapped in endless regret and self-reproach. Better to die than that.
"Feng'er, why are you so foolish!"
Mu Ruxue looked at Qin Feng's rigid back. It was not broad or towering, yet it was extraordinarily resolute.
At once, her eyes reddened, and tears began to well.
Whoosh! Whoosh! Whoosh!
Suddenly, several sharp whistles cut through the air.
And then, five ghostlike figures arrived at speed.
Four young men and one old man.
They came from five directions, encircling Qin Feng and Mu Ruxue.
The old man wore a Taoist robe and had a small goatee, his white hair flowing about him, giving him an air of immortal refinement.
Yet beneath his deep gaze lurked a sharp and sinister light.
An invisible, powerful aura emanated from him.
Under that pressure, Qin Feng sensed danger.
"He is a deacon of the Bright Sun Sect, and he has reached the Spirit Communion realm, probably the early stage."
Mu Ruxue lowered her voice and explained to Qin Feng. "The other four are inner disciples of the Bright Sun Sect. They look like they recently broke through to the early stage of the Air Control realm.
Luckily, they're not especially strong. If we're careful, we should still have a chance."
"Ah!"
Qin Feng nodded, and a mouthful of black corpse aura escaped from his mouth.
Since his aunt said there was a chance, and since he was not afraid of talismans and could use weapons, their odds should rise considerably.
If they could kill these people and drink their blood, perhaps he could even raise his own cultivation level.
"Deacon, Senior Brother Wu and Junior Sister Yang's auras vanished right here.
It looks like they were killed by this evil cultivator witch."
One of the disciples glared at Mu Ruxue with murderous hostility.
Keeping company with a zombie—if that was not an evil cultivator witch, what was?
Most likely, this zombie was a puppet corpse refined by her.
The only person here was this woman; if Senior Brother and Junior Sister were not killed by her, then who could have done it?
"Limitless Heavenly Venerable!"
The Bright Sun Sect deacon stepped forward, his deep eyes suddenly turning sharp. "Demoness, what courage you have.
Killing our Bright Sun Sect disciples on our own ground—you are truly courting death!"
As he spoke, the deacon wielded his horsetail whisk and, with a ritual step, lashed it toward Mu Ruxue.
Mu Ruxue reacted swiftly and dodged at once.
At the same time, she drew her peach-wood sword and engaged the deacon in a fierce battle.
If not for her severe internal injuries, the deacon would never have been her match.
"Junior Brother Wang, go deal with that black zombie."
Among the four inner disciples, the slightly older one spoke to a younger disciple.
"Yes, Senior Brother."
Junior Brother Wang bowed, then drew the peach-wood sword from his back and charged at Qin Feng with killing intent.
Just an early-stage black zombie; nothing more.
With their strength, they could kill it with ease.
There was no need for all four of them to act against it.
Seeing Junior Brother Wang rushing in, Qin Feng turned and leaped toward the cave.
His weapon was still inside.
And his senior brother and junior sister, now transformed into corpses, were there too; he could have them spring from the cave entrance and ambush Junior Brother Wang first.
Anyway, when he communicated with them, they would not understand a word.
Qin Feng could leap three or four meters at a time.
In just three jumps, he reached the entrance.
"It even knows to run?"
A trace of surprise flashed in Junior Brother Wang's eyes, then he sneered. "Beast is as beast does. It can't even run properly. Fleeing into the cave—does it think that isn't a dead end?"
As he spoke, Junior Brother Wang flicked his left hand and swiftly sent out a yellow talisman.
Whoosh!
The talisman sliced through the air and struck Qin Feng in the back.
"Ahh!!"
Qin Feng screamed and lunged forward, pretending he had been blasted away by the talisman.
While flying through the air, an inspiration suddenly flashed through his mind.
Bang!
His heavy body crashed to the ground after plunging into the cave.
Then he lay still, as though dead from the talisman strike.
"Huh..."
Junior Brother Wang froze in place, utterly baffled.
Wasn't the talisman he threw a divine fire talisman?
By rights, it should have burst into blazing flames and swallowed the zombie whole.
How had it directly blasted the zombie away instead?
"Did I pick the wrong talisman?"
He frowned slightly, beginning to doubt himself.
"Junior Brother Wang, impressive. One talisman and you took care of that little zombie.
We'll go help the deacon; you handle the zombie's corpse yourself."
After the older disciple finished speaking, he led the remaining two toward Mu Ruxue.
Hearing the praise, Junior Brother Wang became somewhat smug.
Wrong talisman or not, the zombie was dead by his hand.
With that thought, he took his peach-wood sword and walked to the cave entrance.
He intended to pin the zombie to the ground with a single strike.
Then he would reduce it to a pool of foul water.
But when he entered the mouth of the cave and stepped inside—
Whoosh! Whoosh!
Two fierce gusts struck at him, carrying with them a chilling corpse aura.
"There are more zombies—two of them!"
Junior Brother Wang's pupils shrank. He reacted instantly, stepping with ritual footwork and using his ultimate footwork technique to dodge the attacks from the senior brother and junior sister.
Then he steadied himself and looked at them.
"Ahh!"
Their bodies were stiff, their arms held straight, and black corpse aura hissed from their mouths.
"Senior Brother Wu! Junior Sister Yang!!!"
Junior Brother Wang's face changed in shock.
He never, in his wildest dreams, imagined that the two zombies ambushing him would be his own senior brother and junior sister.
How long had it been since they died, and they had already turned?
According to what he had learned in the Bright Sun Sect, after a person was infected by corpse poison, they would stiffen within a day, swell on the second, and only on the third day would they transform into a zombie.
If the zombie was of a higher grade and its corpse poison stronger, the time would be shorter.
But the demoness's puppet zombie was only an early-stage black zombie.
The corpse poison of a black zombie should not have been enough to turn Senior Brother Wu and Junior Sister Yang so quickly.
Thunk, thunk, thunk...
Just as Junior Brother Wang was sinking into confusion, Senior Brother Wu and Junior Sister Yang hopped forward with heavy, muffled steps, charging at him fearlessly.
"Ahh!"
Junior Sister Yang leaped up, sweeping her arms sideways.
"Eh!"
Senior Brother Wu retracted his straightened arms, then suddenly thrust them forward.
Thrusting and sweeping were the most common attacks of zombies.
Though zombies were impervious to blades and spears and possessed immense strength, their weaknesses were equally obvious.
Their limbs were stiff, their attacks simplistic, and they relied solely on scent to track prey.
As long as the prey held its breath, the zombie would be helpless.
At once, Junior Brother Wang took out two corpse-binding talismans.
With a light flick of his hand—
Whoosh! Whoosh!
The two talismans flew like lightning and, with pinpoint accuracy, stuck to the brows of the two zombies.
Senior Brother Wu and Junior Sister Yang were only at the late white zombie stage, not even black zombies yet. In front of him, they were not even ants.
Dealing with them was easier than eating or drinking.
But just as he had immobilized them—
A fierce wind suddenly struck from behind.
This time, the wind was even more violent.
His assailant was far stronger than Senior Brother Wu and Junior Sister Yang.
