Chapter 9: Starlight Entertainment Makes Its Move
In the adjacent suite, Wen Haoyu was surrounded by others the moment he returned. Mother Wen asked in a low voice, "How did it go? Did you get the phone?"
Wen Haoyu took out the phone and handed it to her. "Here. Hanhan is probably ready to tear me apart by now."
Mother Wen smiled gently. "Don't worry. Hanhan has been closest to you since she was a child; she won't scold you. She's already so ill, yet she still has to exhaust herself livestreaming to bicker with such bottom-feeders. Are those people even worth her energy?"
"Haoyu, the people at your company are all freeloaders. They couldn't even handle such a minor matter, forcing Hanhan to deal with it herself."
Wen Haoyu adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses, his eyes sharpening behind the lenses. "The staff at the company have indeed been lackluster lately. They spent so long gathering evidence, yet their efficiency didn't even match Hanhan's."
The Public Relations Department of Starlight Entertainment, which was currently working overtime and had always prided itself on high efficiency, was being questioned for the first time. It wasn't just Wen Haoyu questioning their ability; when they saw Wen Miaohan’s livestream revelations, even they began to doubt themselves. They hadn’t even managed to outplay the Second Young Miss!
To save face, the PR department finally compiled the evidence they had gathered and posted it online immediately after Wen Miaohan ended her stream.
@StarlightEntertainmentV: We have noted numerous false reports and defamatory statements circulating online against our artist, @WenMiaohan. Our company has now completed the collection of evidence and will take legal action starting today to protect the personal rights of our artist, @WenMiaohan. Additionally, all employees of @WenMiaohanStudio have been dismissed and will never be rehired. Regarding recent controversies surrounding our artist @WenMiaohan, we will release videos shortly to restore the truth.
The Starlight PR department moved quickly. As soon as the statement was posted, they immediately released the videos. True to the work of a top-tier PR team, these videos included not only what Wen Miaohan had just shown but also footage from the set. These clips showed no signs of Wen Miaohan bullying Cheng Xiaoxiao; rather, they showed Cheng Xiaoxiao frequently bullying newcomers. There were also chat logs revealing how Cheng Xiaoxiao’s team had contacted paparazzi and marketing accounts to smear Wen Miaohan and stir up trouble behind the scenes.
While Wen Miaohan had exposed the major points regarding Cheng Xiaoxiao, the evidence released by Starlight, though secondary, was sufficient to prove she hadn't lied. Beyond the Cheng Xiaoxiao incident, Starlight also released various videos involving Fang Le and Ye Lin. Although there were no cameras inside the private offices, there were cameras in the hallways. Initially, Fang Le and her cohorts might have been wary of the hallway surveillance, but people tend to get careless when they indulge for too long. Furthermore, they believed that since Wen Miaohan’s studio was essentially in a state of exile by the company, no one in upper management cared, making them even more reckless.
The hallway surveillance couldn't capture the entire office area, but it caught enough. The daily routines inside the office were perfectly clear—hardly anyone was working; they were either sleeping, gossiping, or playing games. In addition to the office footage, the PR department also obtained surveillance from the bars and hotels they frequented. It couldn't be helped—the Wen family’s business interests were just too extensive.
With these videos, the three most active troublemakers of the day—Fang Le, Ye Lin, and Cheng Xiaoxiao—were completely finished. As for the professional trolls and marketing accounts that had made money smearing Wen Miaohan over the last three months, they were now facing a massive headache. Everyone in the industry knew that Starlight Entertainment’s legal team was the same undefeated group that served the Wen Enterprise. Once they were targeted, they wouldn't escape without losing a layer of skin.
A quiet night should have been spent in a sweet embrace with dreamland, but tonight, the entire entertainment industry—save for Wen Miaohan, whose phone had been confiscated and powered off—remained sleepless. The individuals at the center of the storm were still struggling to escape, while those on the periphery were busy calculating how to associate themselves with Wen Miaohan. Having been "abandoned" by Starlight Entertainment for three months, Wen Miaohan had suddenly regained favor; if they could hitch a ride on this wave of traffic, it would only benefit them.
Zhuang Xu, a former colleague who had worked with Wen Miaohan and was currently huddled in his apartment picking at his toes, felt incredibly exhilarated after following the drama all day. "Wen Miaohan’s comeback was truly beautiful! I must catch this wave of traffic." He picked up his phone, dialed a contact at a marketing account, and after much haggling, the other party agreed to help him stir up the old news for a small fee.
After a good night's sleep, Wen Miaohan was jolted awake at dawn by her temperamental stomach. "Good grief, if I had known I would transmigrate into a book, I never would have written myself a stomach cancer subplot." Wen Miaohan muttered the complaint without even opening her eyes.
"Hanhan, you're awake? What did you just say?" Mother Wen’s voice rang out, causing Wen Miaohan to snap her eyes open.
Damn it! Since when were there so many people in the hospital room? Had they heard her muttering?
"Did I say something just now?" Wen Miaohan asked with feigned confusion.
"You must have been talking in your sleep. It's good you're awake. Sister Wu brought the corn porridge and mini soup dumplings you love early this morning. Do you want to sit up and eat a little?"
Wen Miaohan replied softly, "Yes." Breakfast was a must; the emptier her stomach, the more uncomfortable she felt. Besides, she was a bit of a foodie—how could she turn down delicious food prepared and brought right to her bedside? This was a treatment she never received in her real life. Even though she didn't like cooking and usually lived on takeout, takeout could never compare to home-cooked meals.
"Then let Mom help you up to wash up." As Mother Wen reached out to assist, Wen Miaohan dodged her. "No need, I can get up myself."
After saying this with uncharacteristic nonchalance, Wen Miaohan tried to push herself up from the bed, but as she exerted force, she was stunned. Why did she feel so weak after a night's sleep? She was completely baffled! Having been physically robust in her previous life—rarely even needing medicine for a cold or fever—she had no idea that after receiving IV fluids, one often experiences weakness in the limbs due to edema and the effects of the medication.
What was she supposed to do now?
Just as Wen Miaohan was struggling with the awkward situation, the door to the ward was slammed open. Wen Haoran, who had flown back from the United States overnight, charged in like a whirlwind, lunged toward the bed, gripped her arms tightly, and began inspecting her thoroughly from head to toe.
"Hanhan, how are you? Are you in pain? Are you nauseous? Don't be afraid, Hanhan! Third Brother is here. What am I here for if not to slay monsters? With me around, what is a mere case of stomach cancer?"
Wen Haoran rattled on incessantly, not giving Wen Miaohan a chance to speak. At that moment, Wen Miaohan only felt that her arms were aching terribly! Did all the Wens have a habit of grabbing people by the arms? She certainly hadn't written that into their character settings!
